APAR status

Error description

  • When backbyname encounter read errors on files while it
already started backing up the file. It doesn't exit, it
continue to loop in read for the supposed remaining bytes
thus continue to output the same error, for the same file
for each input blocs it try to read that fail.
The resulting backup will contain the begining of the
input file followed by zeros up to the end of the file
size that was computed before the file went in error.
This can occurs for example when backing up from an nfs
filesystem, and a file is removed from the nfs server.
In that case backbyname will output the following errors
    in loop :
backup: 0511-076 Cannot read the specified file.
./bigfile: A file, file system or message queue is no
    longer available.
backup: 0511-076 Cannot read the specified file.
./bigfile: A file, file system or message queue is no
    longer available.
    etc...

Local fix

Problem summary

  • When backbyname encounters read errors on file while it
already started backing up, it continues
to loop in read for the supposed remaining bytes
thus continue to output the same error, for the same file
for each input blocks it try to read that fails.
This results in too many error messages making it difficult
to analyze and determine what went wrong.

Problem conclusion

  • backbyname will now print only one error message per file
for the read errors if any encountered during the backup
    of that file.
