Error description

  • On AIX 6.1 Technology Level 9 or AIX 7.1 Technology Level 3
or VIOS 2.2.3.x, there is a chance that a disk I/O error will
occur when AIX still has valid paths to the device. This
error will only be seen if the following conditions are true.
    1. Disk is using the AIX default PCM.
    2. Disk is using algorithm round_robin or shortest_queue
    3. AIX is using either the 16Gb FC adapter or the 10Gb FCoE
adapter to attach to the SAN.
    4. There are errors in the SAN between the FC switch
    and the storage device.

If the above conditions are met, there is a chance that AIX
will fail a disk I/O even though there are remaining good
paths to the storage device. When the I/O fails, there
will be an error report entry with label SC_DISK_ERR3 and
the first line of the "SENSE DATA" will end with
    0200 0400 0000 0000.

Problem conclusion

  • Modified that AIX default PCM to ensure it properly selects
good paths when there are still good paths available.
