IV52995: ETHER_ATON DOES NOT VALIDATE THE INPUT AS EXPECTED APPLIES TO AIX 6100-09

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • ether_aton() routine does not sufficiently validate the
input.

Octets should be between 0 and ff, but ether_aton does
not
return error when the value of the octets are outside
this
boundary and if the octets provided are more than 6.

Local fix

  • Provide valid ethernet address as input to ether_aton()

Problem summary

  • If the ethernet address with incorrect value or incorrect
format is passed to ether_aton(), it accepts that.

Problem conclusion

  • Proper checking has been implemented so that only correct
value and correct format will be accepted.
