IV43032: MOUNT -V CIFS GIVES WRONG MESSAGE FOR NETBIOS NAME TOO LONG APPLIES TO AIX 7100-01

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When the NetBIOS name passed to mount -V cifs exceeds its
limit (or the name into which an IP address resolves),
the
wrong message is displayed:
"Password must be 14 characters or less" will be shown
instead of  "Netbios name must be 15 characters or less".

Local fix

  • Do "export LANG=C" prior to running the mount command.

Problem summary

  • Wrong message is printed, when Netbios name is too long

Problem conclusion

  • In smb_ctx_init(), change ERR4 to ERR6, so that the
correct message will be printed -
"Netbios name must be 15 characters or less"
