APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • mksysb restore from SAN disks running PowerPath (EMC)
or DMP (Veritas) may fail to restore with errors similar
to the following.

0516-1775 /usr/sbin/varyonvg: Physical volumes hdisk3 and
hdisk6 have
identical PVIDs (00ca6f6edba1b628).
0516-862 mkvg: Unable to create volume group.
BOS Install: Could not create the root volume group.

Local fix

  • Customer may use a SPOT created from base media at the
same level as the mksysb as a workaround.

* USERS AFFECTED:
* Systems running the 5300-12 Technology Level with the
* bos.rte.lvm fileset between and including the 5.3.12.4 and
# 5.3.12.6 levels.

* PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
* mksysb restore from SAN disks running PowerPath (EMC) or DMP
* (Veritas) may fail to restore with errors similar to the
* following:
*   0516-1775 /usr/sbin/varyonvg: Physical volumes hdisk3 and

* RECOMMENDATION:
* Install APAR IV39297.

Problem conclusion

  • install code sets an environment variable if install is
mksysb. varyonvg will not fail if duplicate PVIDs are found on
the system if the environment variable is set.
