APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • chvg -g on scalable and mirror pool VGs can fail with
# chvg -g VGName
0516-058 lchangevg: Not enough memory available now.
         Try again later
0516-732 chvg: Unable to change volume group VGName
if the VG has 29 or more hdisks

Local fix

  • set maxdata for lchangevg to a higher value
This may work for VGs with up to 56 disks only,
because lchangevg is a 32bit binary and memory
it can address has a limit.

Problem summary

  • LVM is not freeing memory when it should, so chvg -g can fail
if there are enough disks and large enough metadata being
written.

Problem conclusion

  • Free memory properly.
