Error description

  • After putting an IP alias, then deleting the original
address and putting it again, different source IP address
is chosen depending on the order of parameter when it
    was deleted.

The problem happens only when ifconfig is called by
    the order
    "ifconfig [interface] [address] delete".

    For example:
Given an interface enX has IP address A.A.A.A.

    Goodcase:
    # ifconfig enX alias B.B.B.B netmask 255.255.255.0
    # ifconfig enX delete A.A.A.A
    # ifconfig enX alias A.A.A.A netmask 255.255.255.0
    # traceroute C.C.C.C
-> B.B.B.B is used as source address

    Badcase:
    # ifconfig enX alias B.B.B.B netmask 255.255.255.0
    # ifconfig enX A.A.A.A delete
    # ifconfig enX alias A.A.A.A netmask 255.255.255.0
    # traceroute C.C.C.C
-> A.A.A.A is used as source address

Local fix

  • Use ifconfig [interface] "delete [address]" syntax
    instead
    of "[address] delete".

Problem summary

  • After deleting the ip_address using syntax
    "ifconfig interface ip_address delete",
the routing table will continue to display the
    deleted ip_address as route.

Problem conclusion

  • For the syntax "ifconfig interface ip_address delete",
the internal flags set properly & ipaddress is deleted.
