APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • mksysb (or backbyname) may hang while trying to backup
a soft link to another filesystem that doesn't responds.
If /usr/link is a link to /otherfs and /otherfs is a
filesystem that doesn't responds (NFS, autofs, gpfs, gsa,
etc...) the mksysb (or backbyname will hang).
This is due to the backbyname using standard stat
functions
to backup extended attributes instead of using ones that
don't follow the link.

Local fix

  • Fix the filesystem mount hang.
Or exclude the file from the backup or mksysb (link will
need to be rebuilt manually after restore)

  • mksysb (or backbyname) may hang while trying to backup
a soft link to another filesystem that doesn't responds.

Problem conclusion

  • Enable appropriate control flags for usage by backbyname.
