IV04889: PAGING 4K PAGES BECAUSE OF LACK OF 64K PAGE DEMOTIONS APPLIES TO AIX 6100-06

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • The system paged out 4k pages even though there was an
adequate donor pool of 64k pages. Further investigation
showed that the system was trying to use reserved frames
instead of demoting 64k pages.

Local fix

  • Turn off 64K pages completely or turn off MPSS.

Problem summary

  • 4K page working storage pages being stolen when there are
large number of 64K free pages.

Problem conclusion

  • Be more aggressive in MPSS demotion of 64K pages to 4K pages
and steal more MPSS reserved pages per LRUD invocation.
