APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Since IZ77870 fixes the backup command to exit on packing
errors, mksysb/savevg will stop in such case.
This apar will add the -P flag to mksysb/savevg to allow
    administrator to use /etc/exclude_packing.<vgname> to
exclude files from packing so that they are still
archived but not packed to avoid packing errors on files
    updated during the backup.

Local fix

  • Use -e flag to exclude files from backup, but then these
files are not archived with the backup
Use -p flag not to use packing at all during the backup
but then the resulting mksysb size will be larger.

Problem summary

  • backup: 0511-442 <file> will not be backed up

0512-003 mksysb may not have been able to archive some files.

and the backup will stop without completing.

Problem conclusion

  • Since this involves errors with packed files a new option -P
with an /etc/exclude_pack* file listing with files not too pack
but will still be backed up.
