IJ10300: POSSIBLE ERRORS IN CERTAIN NETWORK ADAPTERS APPLIES TO AIX 6100-09

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • **************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED:
    * Systems running the AIX 6100-09 Technology Level
    * with
    * devices.ethernet.lnc2.rte below the 6.1.9.401
    * level or
    * devices.ethernet.lnc.rte below the 6.1.9.401 level.
      **************************************************************
    * ERROR DESCRIPTION:
    * Network adapters using the 'lncentdd' and 'lnc2entdd'
    * drivers may experience issues due to unintended flash writes
    * during the adapter port open/close operations.
    * Affected network adapters currently include the following
    * Feature Codes:
    * EN15, EN16, EN17, EN18, EN0H, EN0J, EN0M, EN0N, EN0K, EN0L.
    *
    * These issues have been primarily seen when the adapter has
    * some unused ports with no IP address configured on them,
    * and performance/health monitoring tools repeatedly open and
    * close those unused ports.
    *
    * We have seen the following issues occur:
    * - HW_TMP_ERR for the affected adapters seen in the errlog
    * - adapter ports get into a dead state, and remain unusable
    *   until partition reboot
    * - adapter permanently failing to configure, requiring
    *   adapter replacement
    *
    * Find out if a system has any adapters using an affected
    * driver with lsdev, for example:
    *
    * # lsdev -F "name ddins" | grep -e lncentdd -e lnc2entdd
    *
    * Note: on a VIOS, this must be run as root using
    * 'oem_setup_env'.
    *
    * As a workaround before applying the fix, a 'dummy' IP
    * address can be configured on the unused ports. This will
    * prevent the frequent open/closes of the adapter ports
    * monitoring tools.
      **************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:
    * Install APAR IJ10300.
    * Prior to fix availability, an interim fix is available from
    * either
    * ftp://aix.software.ibm.com/aix/ifixes/ij10300/
    * https://aix.software.ibm.com/aix/ifixes/ij10300/
    * Installation of the ifix requires a reboot.
      **************************************************************
