IC84805: IBM Systems Dir 6.3 /var/adm/message fill up invalid reg request

APAR status

  • Closed as fixed if next.

Error description

  • Users of Tivoli Common Agent Services (CAS) agent on AIX may see
messages in the /var/adm/message or other system logs logging
SLP errors. The error messages will contain the following (may
be in local languages): Impossible to parse attribute.
These messages may be abundant and may cause the log file to
    grow quickly.

Local fix

  • There is no usage change that will avoid this issue.

Problem summary

  • The slp_reg process in the CAS agent tries to set an attribute
to "" when the RFC only allows for NULL or the attribute name
without a value to be used to indicate no data. Per the RFC,
the AIX slp process logs the error message.
This issue will be resolved in a future release of the CAS
    agent.
    Platforms:
    AIX
    Versions:
IBM Systems Director Common Agent Services (CAS) 6.x

Problem conclusion

  • The fix for this APAR is included in IBM System Director update
    6.3.2.

Temporary fix

  • The client can choose to set net.slp.loglevel=0 in
/etc/slp.conf, which sets up the SLP server to only log
emergency-level messages to syslog. As there are no
emergency-level messages in the SLP server, this would
    effectively disable SLP server logging.
