Error description

  • Software End Of File (SEOF) is not written correctly on FBA-SCSI
device which results in an IO error. This may occur after an
IDCAMS BACKUP/RESTORE of SAM ESDS files.
A Job may abend with IGZ0002S Permanent I/O error,
CEE3322C EXECUTION ABNORMALLY TERMINATED WITH USER-ABEND CODE

Software End Of File (SEOF) is not written correctly on FBA-SCSI
device which results in an IO error when reading the file.
This can occur after an IDCAMS BACKUP/RESTORE of SAM ESDS files.

Problem conclusion

  • When a user program writes incomplete blocks, the SCSI device
driver has to complete the blocks with zeroes, that is padding
with zeroes before writing them to disk. This is requested when
simulating FBA architecture. The padding must be done in the
SCSI device driver since not all SCSI devices padd incomplete
blocks with zeroes on their own.
The padding code is already available in the SCSI device driver.
However, the area which was used for padding, was not cleared to
zero, and unpredictable data were written to disk, for example
x40. Therefore the last record of the file (SEOF) was not zero
and therefore VSAM did not find the end of file record and
    reported an error.
The fix now clears the area which is used for padding always to
zero before writing it to the SCSI device.
