How To
Summary
It shows steps to create a virtual adapter via the HMC enhanced GUI.
Environment
HMC versions 8.8.6 and lower would use the classic view to create virtual adapters.
HMC version 8.8.7 sp1 and higher is required for i hosting i.
HMC version 8.8.7 SP2 + TBD, V9R1M920 SP1 or later for i hosting Linux® or AIX.
Note: There are other situations where it does not work without the latest level of HMC v920.
If no VIOS is managing the partitions, it is likely not going to work until the latest service pack of v887 (dated 10/8/2018).
The versions v920 and v887 do not have fixes available yet for this issue.
i hosting i works, but i hosting AIX or Linux® has to use the command on the host and update the profile on the client partition.
Example of command:
chhwres -m 9009-mmm*xxxxxsn -r virtualio --rsubtype scsi -c a -p HOSTNAME -a "adapter_type=server,remote_lpar_id=x,remote_slot_num=x" -s 2
Potential fix in November 2018 for v920 and December for v887.
Steps
The client partition needs to be created before you can dynamically create a virtual adapter.
NOTE: When the client adapter is created, it also creates a server adapter and creates the 290B resource.
To create from the client, it can be done when client is not activated (update current config).
- Click the name of the client partition.
- In the left navigation, click virtual storage.
- Click adapter view in upper right.
Click create adapter in the category you want to create. Example: fibre or scsi
It automatically detects the next available slot based on the host partition selected.
You need to select the partition of the HOSTING partition. Click OK.
It is now listed under the adapters list.
