Windows Event Viewer shows shipping_server and ALBD errors when using Shipping Server installed by ClearQuest

 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
This technote identifies an issue that can occur in IBM Rational ClearQuest MultiSite. When using the Shipping Server installed with ClearQuest, you might experience errors in the Microsoft Windows Event Viewer.

Symptom
You see these messages in the Windows Application Event Viewer logs on a ClearQuest server when importing syncreplica packets:

WARNING: shipping_server.exe(<Process ID>): Warning: unable to contact the albd on host '<Server Host>': error detected by ClearCase subsystem

ERROR : Albd(<Process ID>): Error: Server shipping_server.exe (pid=<Process ID>) on "" died on startup; marking it as "down".

The packets are successfully received and messages are benign. However, due to the frequency of the messages, other unrelated errors may be obscured.

Cause
An incorrect value was written to the shipping server registry key during the ClearQuest installation. This issue was identified as a product defect under APAR PK97125.

Environment
This problem can occur in ClearQuest 7.0.x environments.

Resolving the problem
This problem no longer occurs starting in ClearQuest 7.1. If on version 7.0.x of the Rational products, this problem will not occur if Rational ClearCase is also installed on the same server.

Workaround for ClearQuest 7.0.x

The incorrect registry values can be modified manually with the Microsoft regedit.exe command.

Warning: This should not be an issue in ClearQuest 7.1 or later, or if ClearCase is also installed on the server. If either is the case, and you are still experiencing this problem, contact IBM Rational Support for further troubleshooting. Do not modify the registry.

  1. From the "Start Menu" choose run and type regedit.
  2. Browse to the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Atria\ClearCase\currentversion
    • On 64-bit versions of Windows, the InstallConfiguration value will be found in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Atria\ClearCase\currentversion
  3. Double click InstallConfiguration value.
  4. Change the Value data to 573 from its current value.
  5. Exit the Registry Editor.

This change is dynamic, no reboot will be required.

 REGISTRY EDITS:

This solution contains information about modifying the system registry. Before making any modifications to the Microsoft® Registry Editor, it is strongly recommended that you make a backup of the existing registry.
