About ClearCase Server Storage locations

Question & Answer

Question

What is the IBM® Rational® ClearCase® server storage location, how is it used and what are the default settings on Microsoft® Windows®, UNIX®, or Linux®?

Cause

Need to learn more about ClearCase Server storage location

Answer

For information about server storage locations, refer to the Server storage locations section of the IBM Rational ClearCase Information Center. The information in this technote is meant as a supplement to that documentation.

Storage for view creation with cleartool mkview:

Dynamic views

Default storage location for dynamic views is none.

A server storage location must be specified explicitly using -stgloc or indirectly using -auto.

For dynamic views, automatic server storage selection proceeds as follows:

  1. Server storage locations that have no global path (-ngpath) are disqualified.
  2. Server storage locations on heterogeneous hosts are disqualified.
  3. Local server storage locations are preferred over remote ones.
  4. A server storage location is selected at random from the remaining candidates.

Snapshot views

Default storage location for snapshot views is automatically selected if the server storage location can be found. Otherwise the -colocated_server option will dictate where the view is stored.

For snapshot views, automatic server storage selection proceeds as follows:

  1. Server storage locations with global paths (-gpath) that reside on heterogeneous hosts are disqualified.
  2. Local server storage locations are preferred over remote ones.
  3. A server storage location is selected at random from the remaining candidates.

Note: The same logic applies when creating a view using the graphical user interface (GUI); the view creation wizard. Also, for assistance, use the Help button available from the storage selection dialogue of the view creation wizard.

Storage Locations with ClearCase Interop

In an interop environment it is not possible for a server storage location to be created across operating systems when using Rational ClearCase.

The opposing platforms are not able to convert the command syntax from black-slash '\' to forward-slash '/' and vice versus.

For example, attempts to run cleartool mkstgloc from a Windows host with the storage on a UNIX or Linux server fails with the following syntax error:

M:\>cleartool mkstgloc -vob -region region_name -host UNIX_server -hpath \\UNIX_server\share -gpath \\UNIX_server\share New_storage_location \\UNIX_server\share.
cleartool: Error: Required command argument is missing.

Usage: ...

The server storage location must be created from a host on the same platform.

Note: Views and VOBs that get created in an interop environment must also be created from the hosting platform, refer to technote 1123321 for more details.

Creating Server Storage Location in a Different Region

To create a storage location that is used in a different region than the default region the machine is set to, use the mkstgloc -region option.

Documentation

For more information on cleartool mkstgloc, mkview or mkvob, review the command descriptions in the IBM Rational ClearCase Information Center (or cleartool man <sub-command>).

More information for managing storage directories is also available in the IBM Rational ClearCase Information Center under the VOB or View administration sections.
