About the .specdev file in /view directory

Problem(Abstract)

This technote explains what the IBM® Rational® ClearCase® .specdev file is in the /view directory on UNIX® and Linux® as well as how to recreate it if missing.

Symptom

If this .specdev file is not present, errors such as the following may occur:

cleartool: error: Unable to create directory < viewtag >: not a clearcase object.



Cause

The .specdev file is a character special device file. It is used for all client communication, like cleartool, clearmake, clearaudit, and other ClearCase commands and processes.

If this file is not present, errors such as that listed above will be reported.


Resolving the problem

A reinstall of ClearCase is necessary in order to recreate the .specdev file.
