Methods of pushing down Sametime 7.5.x & 8.0 client updates

Technote (FAQ)

Question

What options are available to download plugins or updates to a Sametime® 7.5.x & 8.0 Connect client?

Answer

There are several options available. Below is a summary of each option. Further details are available in Chapter 12 of the IBM® Redbooks® publication "Extending Sametime 7.5 - Building Plug-ins for Sametime."

**Note: In general, these updates or patches come in the form of updated plugins. This document assumes that the plugin is packaged as described in technote #1246886 and in the Sametime 7.5.1 Information Center. The update site must have the appropriate jar files and a site.xml. Please reference the above technote to understand how the plugin must be packaged.

For version 8.0.x, you can also reference the following topic in the Sametime InfoCenter:
Adding optional features to the client after install

Option 1: Automatic

Administrators can configure a Sametime server to force updates to all of the Sametime Connect clients within the environment.

Summary of steps:
  1. Using a Notes® client, open the stconfig.nsf file (located on the Sametime 7.5.x or 8.0 server) and double-click the 'CommunityClient' document.

  2. Edit the "URL for UIM Provisioning" field by adding the full path to the update site. Make sure you include http:// in the link. The field does not automatically add it.
    Example:
    URL for UIM Provisioning: http:// /STclientupdate/site.xml
  3. Beginning in Sametime 7.5.1, you are also required to put this URL in the "Sametime update site URL" field in the Policy which applies to the users. You can edit the Policy by going to Administer the Server via stcenter.nsf on the web.
  4. Save the changes.

  5. Restart the server.

Now, when users log in, they will be notified that their client has received updates.

Option 2: Automatic

Update the preferences.ini file located on a user's workstation with the URL to the update site. The preferences.ini is located in this directory:

\Program Files\ibm\Sametime Connect\plugins\com.ibm.collaboration.realtime.update_1.0.0

The format for preferences.ini is:

adminUpdatePolicyURL=http://server.domain.com/directoryname/site.xmls

Option 3: Automatic

Domino® 8 servers introduced a new option for deploying Eclipse update sites, which can be used with Sametime clients: the Eclipse Update Site database.

For information on exactly how to deploy this database on a Domino 8 server, reference the Domino 8 Administration Guide or Information Center topic: Understanding the Eclipse update site

* Note that this functionality does not work with a default Sametime 7.5.x Connect client. Contact IBM Support for a hotfix which can be applied to these versions if you are interested in using this method as a Sametime update site.

Option 4: Manual

Configure the Sametime 7.5.x client to access a Server-based Update site:
  • The option to manage/install plugins differs between 7.5 CF1 and 7.5.x clients:
    • Sametime 7.5 CF1 client plugins are installed under File -> Manage Updates -> Download Plugins.
    • Sametime 7.5.x client plugins are installed under Tools -> Plug-Ins -> Install Plug-Ins:
  • Choose "Search for new features to install" and click Next.

  • Create a New Remote Site which points to the XML site you created for this update. If you need information on creating the XML site, refer to technote #1246886.

  • Click Finish. You should now be given a dialog which allows you to choose the update or plugins you would like to install.

Option 5: Manual

Configure the Sametime 7.5 client to access a Local Update site:

  • Unzip update site to local machine - ie c:\update

  • The option to manage/install plugins differs between 7.5 CF1 and 7.5.x clients:
    • Sametime 7.5 CF1 client plugins are installed under File -> Manage Updates -> Download Plugins.
    • Sametime 7.5.x client plugins are installed under Tools -> Plug-Ins -> Install Plug-Ins:

  • Choose "Search for new features to install" and hit Next

  • Create a New Local Site

  • Browse to your update directory from above

  • Choose Finish. You should now be given a dialog which allows you to choose the update or plugins you would like to install.

Important notes
  • For Sametime 7.5.x servers and clients, the update site must be accessible via HTTP and not be secured via SSL. If your Sametime server uses SSL, you could place the update site on any other web server which does not.

  • Beginning in Sametime 8.0, you can use SSL secured update sites. Refer to the instructions found in the Information Center topic Installing client updates from a secured site.

  • Update sites can be hosted on any web server that the clients can reach; they do not necessarily have to be on the Sametime server.

  • Automatic updates are only pushed down from the default community. If users are connected to multiple communities and an automatic update is configured on one of the non-default communities, that user will not be pushed down the update.

  • In Sametime 7.5.x Connect clients, plugins could be dropped into the install directory's \plugins directory and be picked up by the Sametime Connect client. Beginning in 8.0, however, in order to further align with Lotus Expeditor requirements, in order to install a plugin, you must follow one of the approved methods noted above in this document.
