Notes Client Multilingual User Interface (MUI) functionality changes for Notes 8.x

Technote (FAQ)

Question

IBM Lotus Notes Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Packs were introduced in release 7 to allow the administrator to set up multilingual Notes clients. MUI packs were typically used only by those in need to build multilingual clients as translated versions of the Lotus Notes clients have been available as free-standing packages on our Passport Advantage site.

The IBM Lotus Notes client 8.x (Basic Configuration) is distributed in the same fashion as the release 7 client. However, the Lotus Notes (Eclipse-based) client 8.x language version releases will be available prepackaged only in French, German and Japanese. MUI packs will be required to prepare clients in any other language. This is accomplished by replacing the language files of the English Standard client.

Two new concepts are to be understood with the release 8 MUI packs:

  • the ability to "replace" local template and help files
  • the different packaging of the MUI packs to select the appropriate one to translate the release 8 client of your choice in any one of the available 27 languages:

For IBM Lotus Notes 8.x Standard Configuration (also called the Notes 8.x Eclipse-based client):
- Lotus Notes 8.x MUI Pack for G1
- Lotus Notes 8.x MUI Pack for G2a
- Lotus Notes 8.x MUI Pack for G2b
- Lotus Notes 8.x MUI Pack for G3

For IBM Lotus Notes 8.x Basic Configuration (informally called the Notes 8.x Basic client):
- Lotus Notes 8.x MUI (Basic) Pack for G1
- Lotus Notes 8.x MUI (Basic) Pack for G2a
- Lotus Notes 8.x MUI (Basic) Pack for G2b
- Lotus Notes 8.x MUI (Basic) Pack for G3

If you have installed Notes 8.x (Eclipse-based) client, please use the MUI Pack 8.x for IBM Lotus Notes 8.x (Eclipse-based) client.
If you have installed Notes 8.x Basic client, please use the MUI Pack 8.x (Basic) for IBM Lotus Notes 8.x Basic client.

This document provides further information about the MUI Pack 8.x.

Answer

There are two major changes on MUI Pack 8.x release.

1. Support for "Replace local template and help files" option
For MUI Pack 7.x release, the MUI Pack provides the ability to add multiple language files to Notes client except for template and help files.

For MUI Pack 8.x release, the MUI Pack provides a new ability to replace local template and help files. This option allows for instance the administrator to prepare a localized Notes client that is not already available as a free-standing package. The 'Local template/help language' option is illustrated in Figure 2 below.

2. Change of the language groups
The MUI Pack 8.x consists of four products grouped as shown in the below tables. The tables also include the part numbers for the Notes 8.0.2 MUI packs which you can download from IBM Passport Advantage.

How to install the MUI Pack:

1. Ensure you have a Notes 8.x client installed on the workstation (either single user or multi-user).

2. Shut down the Notes client.

3. Start the MUI Pack executable. You must use the same version of the MUI Pack installer as the Notes client you installed or upgraded to in Step 1. If you attempt to install the MUI Pack on a version that does not match the Notes client version, the MUI Pack Installer terminates automatically.

4. In the setup, select the language files to add to the Notes client in the wizard dialog boxes. By default, the language is matched with your OS locale setting.

Note: Domino Administrator language versions are available for French, German, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese only. If you want to install MUI Pack for the rest of the languages for All Clients Notes, please do not select the Administrator Client initially when first installing Notes. If Administrator is installed on your computer, only the supported languages are installable with MUI Pack. If you select the rest of the languages in this dialog you will not be able to proceed with the installation and be required to either unselect the languages not available for the Administrator client or not install the Administrator client to keep the desired language settings.

4a. If you have installed a single-user Notes client, you see the next dialog.

User Interface language
Choose a default Notes UI language the next time you start the Notes client. After installing the MUI Pack, you can change the language of the UI whenever desired. To do so, select File>Preferences > User Preferences > International > General > Additional Settings > Interface Languages.

Local template/help language
Choose a local template and help language if you want to replace the current ones.

Figure 2

  • The MUI Pack will be disabled if the Notes client is upgraded or uninstalled since the MUI Pack must work with the same version of the Notes client.
  • When switching languages via the Interface Language user preference, the change of language applies only to the Notes interface code (after recycling the client), not the templates. In a multi-user Notes client type, localized templates are installed for each language selected. There are unilingual templates stored in a specific library for each language and local database setup according to the user's operating system locale settings.

Additional Information

Silent install:

For MUI Pack 8.x, the next properties are public in addition to MSI public properties. These are mainly used for silent install. For command line examples, please see the section below titled 'Command line examples'.

INITIALUILANG

Command Line Examples:

You can specify command line options during install. You must be logged in as an Administrative user or a user with elevated privileges.

Silent install examples:

Use the ' qn' option to run the install in silent mode without a progress bar. This example installs German language files on an English Notes client.
setup.exe /s /v"/qn ADDLOCAL=German"

Use the ' qn+' option to display a message when the installation is complete or it has failed. This example installs German and French language files on an English Notes client and sets the default UI to German.
setup.exe /s /v"/qn+ ADDLOCAL=German,French INITIALUILANG=de"

Use the ' qb+' option to display a progress bar during the installation, in addition to displaying the message indicating that the installation is complete or it. This example installs German and French language files on an English Notes client, sets the default UI to German, and replaces the English file with German.
   setup.exe /s /v"/qb+ ADDLOCAL=German,French INITIALUILANG=de REPLACELOCALDB=1 LOCALDBLANG=de"

Notes on USB Install Examples:

Use ' a' option and ' NOMAD' options to install the MUI Pack on Notes on USB.

This example installs all language files in MUI Pack products on English Notes on USB.
   setup.exe /a /v"NOMAD=1"

This example installs German and French language files on English Notes on USB.
   setup.exe /a /v"NOMAD=1 INSTMUILANG=de,fr"

This example installs German and French on English Notes on USB, and sets the default UI to German.
 setup.exe /a /v"NOMAD=1 INSTMUILANG=de,fr INITIALUILANG=de"

setup.exe /a /v"NOMAD=1 INSTMUILANG=de,fr INITIALUILANG=de REPLACELOCALDB=1 LOCALDBLANG=de"

Dynamic CAB configuration:

The MUI Pack groups Notes languages. If you can assume some of the languages are never installed, Dynamic CAB configuration is available. This reduces the file size of the MUI Pack by allowing the administrator to remove the unused languages.

For example, say your company wants to use only the French and German languages. These languages are contained in MUI Pack for Group 1 (refer to Table 1a above). In this case, you can remove all the .cab files except for the German and French languages (data1.cab and data2.cab files) from the MUI Pack kit.

List for each cab file associated with its language:

Note: Languages from different MUI kits cannot be combined. Each language has a footprint of approximately 30 MB; double digit languages require slightly more space.

For this example, the following image shows what the language options will look like when running through the installer; only the German and French language options are available.
