Error description

  • VTAM TI00 buffers are stranded after Enterprise Extender
hard INOP. TI00 buffers contain ALLC headers with UI
frames. Decimal 632 bytes will be stranded for
    each EE line.
Sample data in TI00 buffer will contain ALLC_1483_HDRBASE:
    FEFE03094C8070

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: ECSA TI00 buffer pool growth after *
    * Enterprise Extender hard INOP. *

    ****************************************************************
The problem is summarized as follows:
    1) Enterprise Extender is active with thousands of active
       connections.
    2) In this case, high CPU conditions caused dispatching
issues leading to an ECSA spike.
    3) The available ECSA was temporarily exhausted resulting in
an INOP occurring on the EE IUTSAMEH connections to the
       TCP/IP stack.

IST1578I HARD INOP DETECTED FOR IUTSAMEH BY ISTTSC89 CODE = 0
       IST1683I HPR/IP PORT FAILURE: ID = XCAEE STATUS = 80100045

    4) The IUTSAMEH INOP results in an INOP for each active EE
       line.

       IST259I INOP RECEIVED FOR LNIP1 CODE = 02

    5) After the CPU issues were resolved, and the XCA major node
reactivated, ECSA was still higher than normal.

    6) Analysis of a dump revealed that thousands of TI buffers were
       stranded.

The content of the TI buffer contained the hex string:
       x'FEFE03094C8070' (ALLC_1483_HDRBASE).
These are buffers preallocated for each EE connection in the
event an error occurs (i.e. timeout condition).

    7) The hard INOP experienced in this outage resulted in the
code that normally frees these buffers to be bypassed. This
results in on lost TI buffer for each line that has
       an active EE connection.

For large configurations with 1000s of lines, this could lose
a significant number of buffers during a hard INOP,
       potentially exhausting ECSA over time.

Problem conclusion

  • ISTTSCCN - Segment CLEANAU has been modified to free the
               LDLCB_INOP_PTR if it exists.
ISTAUCLA - Included for maintenance purposes.
