Setting up a scanner in ImagePlus Workstation Program for Windows 2000, XP or Vista

 Technote (FAQ)

Question
This document describes some of the common things to try when setting up a SCSI-attached scanner on an IBM® ImagePlus® Workstation Program (IWPM) for a Windows® workstation.

Answer
1. Locate your Image and Scanner Interface Specification (ISIS) scanner driver.

Make sure that the scanner you want to connect has an ISIS driver. IWPM does not support TWAIN drivers. The ISIS driver is usually provided with the scanner from the manufacturer, but the driver may also be obtained from the company that writes ISIS drivers, Pixel Translations, a division of EMC/Captiva Software. If IWPM does not supply the ISIS driver that you need, or if you want an updated version of the driver for your scanner, you can often get it from the scanner manufacturer's Web site. It is recommended that you go to the Pixel Translations Web site to find out if the driver you are using is the most current one available:
https://www.scannerdrivers.com/scannerdrivers/index.asp

Scanner drivers have a *.PXN extension and reside in the c:\windows\pixtran or c:\winnt\pixtran directory. Note that Pixel provides some of the scanner drivers for a fee, so it is recommended that you check with your scanner manufacturer first. When you purchase a scanner, the scanner manufacturer generally provides a CD-ROM that contains a setup utility that places the appropriate *.PXN files in the pixtran directory of Windows.

2. Bring your ASPI layer up-to-date.

If you are using an Adaptec Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) card, make sure that you have downloaded the latest Advanced SCSI Programming Interface (ASPI) update program from the Adaptec Web site:
http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/downloads

You can download from this site and then run the ASPIINST.EXE program on your scanning workstation to update its ASPI layer.

3. Update ImagePlus Workstation Program for Windows.

Make sure that you are running the latest fix pack for IWPM for Windows. You can download it from the following Web site:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/imageplus/fixes/IWPMv2.3fp2/

All languages are contained within the IWPMv23fp2.zip file. The Readme.txt file has the installation instructions. There are also individual fixes on this Web site that have been released since the latest fix pack build. They are documented in the interimAPARlisting.txt file. Download and install any individual fixes that pertain to scanning.

4. Obtain the current IBMISIS.DLL.

If you have trouble when creating your scanner Document Type Profile (DTP) inside IWPM, it is likely that you have a scanner model that requires updated IBMISIS.DLL and IBMISIS2.DLL files. It is always a good idea to obtain the latest version of these files. Contact IBM Software Support if you are not running the version provided in the step immediately above. Both the IBMISIS.DLL and IBMISIS2.DLL should be copied to the scanning workstation's c:\evn\bin directory.

5. Try to scan outside of IWPM.

If you cannot scan in IWPM, you can try the Pixel ScanOnly utility because it removes IWPM from the process and will confirm that the Windows operating system can talk to the scanner by using the SCSI card and ISIS driver. This utility is available from the Web site ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/imageplus/fixes/IWPMv2.3fp1/iwpmxp/ . It is simple to run because it consists of an EXE and a CHN file. While this utility does not display the image, it allows the user to select the scanner, scan an image, and view stats on the sheet read. This is useful when trying to isolate a failing component. Unzip the ScanOnly.zip and add the files to a directory of your choice, or they can go in c:\evn. Run the scnonlyn.exe. To get started, click on "Scan" and "Select Scanner". Try scanning several pages to make sure it does not fail. Any errors must be resolved before scanning in IWPM will work.

6. Contact IBM Software Support for detailed scanner setup assistance. Assistance will be provided through on-site support or ConsultLine, both of which are billable services. If you are interested in obtaining one of these services, call 1-888-426-4343.
