Overview

What is it?

The DB2 Run-Time Client Lite is a smaller footprint version of the DB2 Run-Time Client, and contains support necessary for JDBC, SQLJ, ODBC, CLI, OLE DB and .NET. The software is shipped as a single executable, making it easy to redistribute and deploy. It is only available for the Windows® operating system, and supports only the TCP/IP and Named Pipes communication protocols.

The DB2 Run-Time Client Lite also provides Merge Modules that can be used by other Windows Installer based installations to easily embed connectivity to DB2 Universal Database servers in your own application.

The DB2 Run Time Client Lite contains the absolute minimum file set (outside of using the DB2 JDBC Type 4 driver) for DB2 connectivity and is designed with mass deployments on the Windows platform in mind. For example, the DB2 Run-Time Client for Windows is about 80 MB, the DB2 Run-Time Client Lite for Windows is about 12 MB.

Who uses it?

The DB2 Run-Time Client Lite is designed to be redistributable by independent software vendors (ISVs) and to be used for application distribution in mass deployment scenarios typical of large enterprises.

Why use it?

This new client provides two important benefits.
First, for customers that need to enable a large number of Windows desktops for DB2 server connections, it provides a convenient way of deploying DB2 drivers (ODBC, CLI, OLE DB, the DB2 .NET Data Provider, JDBC, and SQLJ) with little effort and impact on the network.
Second, for application developers that want to provide a complete out-of-the-box solution for their customers, IBM now provides a redistribution license that allows an ISV to package these drivers as part of their application and distribute them at no extra charge and without the need for custom agreements or contracts with IBM (it is even available as Microsoft Merge Modules, so adding it to your application is as simple as clicking a button).

When was it introduced?

The DB2 Run-Time Client Lite was added to and is only available in the DB2 UDB Version 8.2 product line. DB2 UDB V8.2 started with DB2 UDB V8.1 FP7.

Effective April 30, 2009, IBM will withdraw support from the DB2 UDB V8.2 product releases. Please read the DB2 UDB V8.2 EOS Flash for more information.

FAQ = Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is the download for the Run-Time Client Lite larger than 500 MB ? Isn't this this "Lite" version?
A: The download for the Run-Time Client Lite is larger than 500 MB because it includes installations for all languages and also the merge modules for each language. The DB2 Run-Time Client Lite is designed to be redistributable by independent software vendors (ISVs) and to be used for application distribution in mass deployment scenarios typical of large enterprises. After extracting all files, you will find that the installable file for the language you need is much smaller than the download file.

Q: Does the Run-Time Client Lite supply a license to connect to an AS/400?
A: IBM provides a redistribution license with the DB2 Run-Time Client Lite. If you receive an SQL8002N when using this product to connect to an AS/400 it indicates the connection was not made via a DB2 Connect product. The license used to connect to a host database on z/OS and AS/400 systems comes with a
DB2 Connect product that facilitates the connection.

Q: Is it possible to access DB2 Express-C with the DB2 Run-Time Client Lite product?
A: Yes, the client contains the ability to connect to DB2 Express and DB2 Express-C. If you encounter an issue please use the DB2 Express-C support forum.

Q: Need to know which merge module from the DB2 Runtime Lite would be used to deploy the DB2 .NET Provider.
A: The .Net Provider is located in the DB2 Base Client Merge Module.msm file.

Q: Is the DB2 Run-Time Client Lite product still supported?
A: End of Support for DB2 UDB V8.2 products is effective April 30, 2009.
