Accessing a virtual portal through a web server results in 404 error and EJPEI0088E

Problem(Abstract)
If a virtual portal has a hostname defined for use as the friendly URL, then no virtual portal context is required when accessing it through an external web server.
 
Symptom
If a virtual portal is defined with:


hostname = vphost.com
URL context = vpcontext

then attempts to access it through an external web server with the URLs:

http://vphost.com/wps/portal/vpcontext

or:

http://vphost.com/wps/myportal/vpcontext

result in a HTTP 404 error in the web browser.

 
Diagnosing the problem
Tracing WebSphere Portal (with trace string com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.*=all:com.ibm.ws.wswebcontainer.*=all:com.ibm.wsspi.webcontainer.*=all:HTTPChannel=all:GenericBNF=all) shows:
... SRTServletRes 3 sendError --> 404 EJPEI0088E: The resource vpcontext could not be found. :                   com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.srt.SRTServletResponse@66a566a5
 
Resolving the problem
Access the virtual portal via its friendly URL hostname, omitting the URL context:

http://vphost.com/wps/portal

or:

http://vphost.com/wps/myportal
