Error description

  • When attempting to restore a mailbox where the logged on user's
mailbox alias is a substring of another mailbox alias, this will
fail with ACN0151E and ACN5909E messages:
ACN0151E Errors occurred while processing the request.
        Mailbox restore failed.
ACN5909E The MAPI subsystem logon has failed. Please check
that you have an active mailbox and sufficient privileges
        for this operation.
For example if 2 mailbox aliases exist, where one is a sub
    string of the other:
user/mailbox alias: tivoli <----- logged on recovery user
      user/mailbox alias: tivoli1
Note that the failure will occur whenever there is another
mailbox alias and the recovery user's mailbox alias is a sub
string, regardless whether it is the mailbox being restored or
    not.
The trace will show the failure for the
ConfigureMessageService() on the profile which fails with
    MAPI_E_AMBIGUOUS_RECIP.
If TESTMAPI is performed by the user whose mailbox alias is a
substring, this will also show the failure:
       C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\TDPExchange>tdpmapi.exe testmapi
                            /mailboxalias=tivoli /excserver=hubble
       tdpmapi TESTMAPI
      Testing MAPI [HUBBLE, tivoli]....
        Set Profile Error: MAPI_E_AMBIGUOUS_RECIP
    .
affected versions: MS Exchange Server 2003 and 2007
                         DP Exchange 6.1
    .
Keywords: zz61 displayname display name string

When attempting to restore a mailbox where the logged on
user's mailbox alias is a substring of another mailbox alias,
this will fail with ACN0151E and ACN5909E messages:

ACN0151E Errors occurred while processing the request.
    Mailbox restore failed.
ACN5909E The MAPI subsystem logon has failed. Please check
that you have an active mailbox and sufficient privileges for
    this operation.

If tdpmapi TESTMAPI is performed by the user whose mailbox
alias is a substring, will also show the failure:

    tdpmapi TESTMAPI
Testing MAPI [HUBBLE, tivoli]....Set Profile Error:
    MAPI_E_AMBIGUOUS_RECIP

When configuring the exchange message service on the profile,
values passed to the ConfigureMsgService for the Mailbox Alias
or Mailbox Display Name were ambiguous. The problem essentially
revolves around mailbox aliases or display names that are sub
strings of each other. This is only pertinent to the recovery
user that is running the restore.

Problem conclusion

  • This problem is discussed in the following Microsoft Knowledge
    Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/193643.

In this article there is a prescribed fix for this problem
that entails prepending a '=' to the mailbox alias that is
passed when configuring the message service for the MAPI
profile. This fix has been implemented.
