Is it possible to perform a VSS restore of an SQL database backup to an different machine?
Cause
The SQL Writer service has a limitation to only restore VSS backups to the same SQL instance where the backup was performed.
Answer
No, a VSS SQL backup cannot be restored to an alternate machine. This is a Microsoft restriction, as noted in the following document:
It is possible to do a Restore with Move or a Database Rename as long as the database remain within the original SQL instance (where the backup was taken).
