IC55709: TSM API Can Incorrectly Store Data Under Specific Conditions

 Flash (Alert)

Abstract
Under certain conditions the TSM API can back up or archive data incorrectly to the TSM Server. This can only happen when all of the following are used: LAN-Free data movement, encryption, and compression.

Content
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
When using the TSM API in combination with all of the following options during backup or archive operations, the TSM API can back up or archive data incorrectly to the TSM Server. This can only happen when all of the following conditions are true:
  • LAN-Free data movement is used
  • TSM DES56 or AES128 encryption is used
  • TSM compression is used
  • The compression operation results in a file size greater than 32 KB

There will be no errors communicated during the backup/archive operation. The problem will only become evident when you try to restore or retrieve the data.

WHAT IS THE RESULT OF THIS PROBLEM?

You will be permanently unable to restore or retrieve the data. The problem will manifest itself on restore or retrieve operations in one of several ways:
  • A message will be issued indicating the data format is invalid.
  • A message will be issued indicating the data could not be decompressed.
  • The application that uses the API might crash.

WHAT API LEVELS ARE AFFECTED BY THIS PROBLEM?

This problem exists in the TSM API versions:
  • 5.3.0.0 – 5.3.5.5
  • 5.4.0.0 – 5.4.1.6
  • 5.5.0.0 – 5.5.0.5

WHICH PLATFORMS ARE AFFECTED BY THIS PROBLEM?

All API platforms that support a combination of LAN-Free data movement, encryption, and compression:
  • AIX
  • HP-UX
  • Linux
  • Solaris
  • Windows

WHICH APPLICATIONS ARE AFFECTED BY THIS PROBLEM?

Any application that uses an affected level of the TSM API to send data to the TSM server is affected when all of the previously described conditions are met.

RECOMMENDATION

IBM strongly urges you to apply the fix to this problem as soon as it is available for your API version and platform. Until the fix is available, you should ensure that do not enable the exact combination of product features that cause the problem.

WHERE CAN I OBTAIN A FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM?

Click on the platform name in this table to take you to the code download directory for the platform and fix level. Interim fixes and fix packs are cumulative, so interim fixes or fix packs after these fix levels will also include the fix.
Fix Level Date Available Platforms
5.5.1.0June 27, 2008AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Solaris, Windows
5.5.0.6April 11, 2008AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Solaris, Windows

5.3.6.0April 30, 2008AIX, Linux x86 (RHEL 3), Solaris SPARC (Solaris 8), Windows x32 (Windows 2000)

It is not required to upgrade your Tivoli Data Protection components in order to obtain the fix for this problem. The fix is included in the API packages. Therefore, you may simply download and install the API fix that supports the version that you are using.

Tivoli Data Protection components that release after the publication of this flash will ship the corrected V5.5.0.6 API in their respective media refresh packages:
