IBM Spectrum Protect server support for NFS

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

IBM Spectrum Protect™ server support for Network File Systems (NFS) is described.

Content

The use of NFS in an IBM Spectrum Protect environment is not preferred and not tested. To learn about the preferred methods for configuring a storage environment, see the IBM Spectrum Protect Blueprints.

Problem Description:
If you decide to use NFS in an IBM Spectrum Protect server environment, ensure that the environment is properly configured. In this way, you can help to prevent data loss.

Your system must meet the following requirements:

  • Configure the NFS client to mount the file system by using the -o sync option on UNIX and Linux, or the -o dio option on an IBM AIX operating system.
  • Configure the NFS server to export the file system with the sync option.
  • Ensure that the NFS client and NFS server are NFS-compliant. An NFS-compliant server must respond to a FILE_SYNC request only with a FILE_SYNC reply.
  • Ensure that the NFS client and NFS server use an NFS Version 3 protocol or later.

Restrictions:

  • Do not use storage pools of devtype=DISK with NFS storage. Do not place the database or logs on an NFS mount.
  • You cannot use shared files for LAN-free data movement. Because of differences in NFS implementation for caching and file-locking operations, you cannot use shared files on an NFS mount. For more information about server-supported file systems, see technote 1902417.

Validating storage pool volumes:

To validate storage pool volumes on an NFS mount, conduct a periodic audit by running the AUDIT VOLUME command with the FIX=NO parameter.
