1. When defining a device class for LTO 3 drives, use

  • devtype=LTO
  • format=<DRIVE | ULTRIUM3 | ULTRIUM3C>
    Example:

    DEFine DEVclass devclassname DEVType= LTO FORMAT= ULTRIUM3 .....

    DEFine DEVclass devclassname DEVType= LTO FORMAT= ULTRIUM3C .....

ULTRIUM3 - Specifies that TSM writes data that uses the ULTRIUM recording format. This format results in a cartridge capacity of 400GB when using Ultrium Generation 3 media.

ULTRIUM3C - Specifies that TSM writes data that uses the ULTRIUM recording format with compression. This format results in a cartridge capacity of approximately 800GB when using Ultrium Generation 3 media.

2. 400GB native capacity and approximately 800GB with 2:1 compression

3. Supported media
Ultrium-1 200GB data cartridge (Read Only)
    Ultrium-2 400GB data cartridge
    Ultrium-3 800GB data cartridge

4. Quantum LTO-3 HH drives with firmware revision ending in F require the following Tivoli Storage Manager Server versions.
  • Tivoli Storage Manager Server version 5.5 - maintenance level 5.5.5 or later
  • Tivoli Storage Manager Server version 6.1 - currently not supported
  • Tivoli Storage Manager Server version 6.2 - maintenance level 6.2.2 or later

6. Firmware download for IBM tape products is available from Fix Central.

7. IBM device drivers are required for LTO-3 drives with the following device identifications.
    • IBM ULTRIUM-TD3
    • IBM ULT3580-TD3
    • IBM ULTRIUM-HH3 - minimum TSM levels required: 5.3.5, 5.4.1
    • IBM ULT3580-HH3 - minimum TSM levels required: 5.3.5, 5.4.1
    • IBM 400/800GB HH LTO Gen 3 - supported on Windows only, minimum TSM levels required: 5.4.4, 5.5.1
IBM device drivers can be downloaded from Fix Central.

8. Automatic cleaning via the CLEANFREQuency=ASNEEDED option
  • For Ultrium drives that are controlled by the IBM device driver, TSM 5.3.6 or TSM 5.4.1 is required. (APAR IC52187)
  • For HP LTO-3, the option is supported with TSM version 5.4.0 and later. (APAR IC50353)
  • For Tandberg LTO-3 HH - the option is supported.

9. For SAS interface, see Technote 1396706 for information on platforms on which SAS devices are supported.

WORM (Write-Once, Read-Many) Support

1. To use WORM media, the following Tivoli Storage Manager level is required.
  • TSM 5.3.1.2 for LTO-3 drives that require IBM device drivers
  • TSM 5.3.1 for HP LTO-3 drives including HP Ultrium 920 and HP Ultrium 960
  • TSM 5.4.0 for Quantum LTO-3 Full-Height drives

2. Ultrium WORM-capable drives can be used as Read/Write or WORM drives. To use them as WORM drives, when defining a device class, use WORM=Yes.

    Example:
    DEFine DEVclass devclassname DEVType=LTO FORMAT=DRIVE WORM=Yes

3. To use Ultrium WORM-capable drives as Read/Write drives, when defining a device class, do not specify the WORM parameter, or use WORM=No.

    Example:
    DEFine DEVclass devclassname DEVType=LTO FORMAT=DRIVE WORM=No

4. Only WORM media can be used for WORM storage pool, and only RW media can be used for RW storage pool.

5. When checking in WORM volumes, use checklabel=yes. Otherwise, they will be checked in as RW volumes.

6. Storage pools assigned to the LTO device class have a default reclamation value of 60. To prevent reclamation of WORM media, set the reclamation value to 100.

7. Ultrium WORM-capable drives can not be defined for use as WORM drives through the Device Configuration wizard on Windows. The drives will have to be defined through IBM Tivoli Storage Manager commands.

8. Supported WORM media
  • Ultrium-3 800GB WORM data cartridge

9. RW and WORM media can be in the same library. However, 2 device classes--RW and WORM, must be defined. Since Ultrium RW drives do not recognize WORM media, all drives in the library must be WORM capable if WORM media will be used.

10. For Quantum LTO-3 WORM drive, the Host Bus Adapter (HBA) to which Quantum Ultrium3 drive is connected must support 16-byte SCSI Command Descriptor Block (CDB).
