Spectra Logic Spectra configuration information for IBM Spectrum Protect Server (formerly TSM)

Preventive Service Planning

Abstract

Configuration information for Spectra Logic Spectra T50, T120, T200, T380, T680, T950, and T-Finity tape libraries

Content

Beginning with Version 7.1.3, IBM® Tivoli® Storage Manager is now IBM Spectrum Protect™. Some applications such as the software fulfillment systems and IBM License Metric Tool use the new product name. However, the software and its product documentation continue to use the Tivoli Storage Manager product name. To learn more about the rebranding transition, see technote 1963634.

Supported library capacity:

The IBM Spectrum Protect(ISP) server supports the maximum capacity.

Bar code requirements:
  • For LTO media, character 7 and 8 in the bar code labels must be media identifier Lx where x is the LTO generation. For example, a bar code label for LTO-5 media would be 123456L5.
  • For SDLT media, character 7 and 8 in the bar code labels must be media identifiers S1 or S2 for SDLT I media, and S3 for SDLT II media. For example, a bar code label for SDLT II media would be 123456S3.
  • For 3592 media, character 7 and 8 must be JD,JC, JK, JY, JB, or JX.

Mixed media support:

Starting with Tivoli Storage Manager version 6.3.2, LTO mixed generation, 3592 mixed generation, and SDLT mixed generation are supported. Mixing media such as DLT and LTO in the same logical library, however, is not supported.

For mixed generation support, bar code labels must meet the bar code requirements. And the library must be configured to return at least 8 characters of bar codes.

Recommended Barcode Reporting configuration:
  • Checksummed behavior - The default is Check-summed barcodes. If your bar code labels do not include a checksum, you must change this setting to Non-checksummed barcodes. Otherwise, the right-most character will be treated as a checksum and will not be reported as part of the barcode.
  • Select Left or Right - Report right-hand characters (default)
  • Select the number of characters to report - Must be at least 8 for mixed generation support.

For more information on the bar code reporting configuration, see "Configure Barcode Reporting" in Spectra T950 Library User Guide.

LTO-7 Support
  • IBM Spectrum Protect Server Version Release 7.1.3 or subsequent maintenance release
  • IBM device driver is required for the IBM LTO-7 drives. IBM device drivers are available at IBM Fix Central. Choose the following options from the drop-down menus.
    • Product Group -> System Storage
    • System Storage -> Tape systems
    • Tape systems -> Tape drivers and software
    • Tape drivers and software -> Tape device drivers
    • Platform -> select the platform for the device driver that you are looking for
Library Managed Encryption:

The DRIVEEncryption parameter for the DEVCLASS command must be set to EXTERNAL when encryption is managed by the library. If DRIVEEncryption is set to ALLOW, the Tivoli Storage Manager server detects that application managed encryption (AME) is enabled and turns off encryption. See Technote 1459734 for more information, and Technote 1269368 for actions that should be taken for volumes that are not encrypted as expected by the Tivoli Storage Manager server.

Libraries and drives may require different minimum Tivoli Storage Manager levels. Therefore, ensure that both library and drive hardware are supported. See " Supported Devices for AIX, HP-UX, Solaris and Windows" or " Supported Devices for Linux" for minimum supported version levels and platforms for these devices.

More information regarding device configuration is available in the Tivoli Storage Manager Administrator's Guide, which can be found in the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager information center.
