Ultrium Generation 2 (LTO-2) Configuration Information for IBM Spectrum Protect Server ( formerly TSM )

Preventive Service Planning

Abstract

Configuration Information for Ultrium Generation 2 (LTO-2) Drives

Content

Beginning with Version 7.1.3, IBM® Tivoli® Storage Manager is now IBM Spectrum Protect™. Some applications such as the software fulfillment systems and IBM License Metric Tool use the new product name. However, the software and its product documentation continue to use the Tivoli Storage Manager product name. To learn more about the rebranding transition, see technote 1963634.

IBM Spectrum Protect™ server still supports LTO-2 tape drives; however, the current IBM® Tape Device drivers do not. In the event of an issue arises with the LTO-2 drive, the preferred corrective action is to upgrade your tape drive hardware to a newer generation LTO drive, then install the latest version of the IBM Tape Device driver.

1. When defining a device class for LTO 2 drives, use

  • devtype=LTO
  • format=<DRIVE | ULTRIUM | ULTRIUMC | ULTRIUM2 | ULTRIUM2C>

Example:

DEFine DEVclass devclassname DEVType=LTO FORMAT=ULTRIUM2 .....

DEFine DEVclass devclassname DEVType=LTO FORMAT=ULTRIUM2C .....

ULTRIUM2 - Specifies that TSM writes data that uses the ULTRIUM recording format. This format results in a cartridge capacity of 200GB when using Ultrium Generation 2 media.

ULTRIUM2C - Specifies that TSM writes data that uses the ULTRIUM recording format with compression. This format results in a cartridge capacity of approximately 400GB when using Ultrium Generation 2 media.

2. 200GB native capacity and approximately 400GB with 2:1 compression

3.Supported media
  • Ultrium-1 200GB data cartridge
  • Ultrium-2 400GB data cartridge

4. Device identifications and firmware levels used during validation

5. The IBM device driver is required for IBM 3580 Gen-2, IBM 200/400GB LTO Gen-2 (P/N 71P9146), Dell PowerVault 110T LTO-2 and StorageTek Ultrium 2 (IBM). All other LTO drives are supported by the TSM device driver. IBM device drivers are available at IBM Fix Central. Choose the following options from the drop-down menus.
  • Product Group -> System Storage
  • System Storage -> Tape systems
  • Tape systems -> Tape drivers and software
  • Tape drivers and software -> Tape device drivers
  • Platform -> select the platform for the device driver that you are looking for Device drivers

6. Automatic cleaning via the CLEANFREQuency=ASNEEDED option
  • IBM Ultrium drives that are controlled by the IBM device driver - not supported
  • HP LTO-2 drives - supported with TSM version 5.4.0 and later
  • Tandberg LTO-2 HH - supported

7. All supported LTO Generation 2 drives with SAS interface are supported only on Windows and Linux and require TSM 5.5.2 or later.

Library and drive may require different minimum Tivoli Storage Manager levels. Therefore, ensure that both library and drive hardware are supported. See "Supported Devices for AIX, HP-UX, Solaris and Windows" or "Supported Devices for Linux" for minimum supported version levels and platforms for these devices.

More information regarding removable media is available in the Tivoli Storage Manager Administrator's Guide, which can be found in Tivoli Storage Manager Information Centers.
