Parameters used to control background collections for an agent builder agent

 Technote (FAQ)

Question
What settings can I change to disable or configure background collections for an agent builder agent?

Answer
In the $CANDLEHOME/config directory, there will be a file XX.ini (KXXENV on Windows) where XX is the product code for the agent builder agent. Towards the bottom of this file, there is a series of variables starting with CDP_DP that can be altered to affect how the agent collects data. These environment variables are new in Agent Builder 6.2.1, but can be used with an ITM 6.2 infrastructure.

To disable background collection, change CDP_DP_THREAD_POOL_SIZE to 0. This will force a data collection whenever data is requested by either a situation, historical collection, or query from the TEP client. This setting will cause data to be retrieved only when required and, therefore, reduce the impact on the machine being monitored. This setting is recommended when monitoring a local machine (as opposed to remote monitoring).

If CDP_DP_THREAD_POOL_SIZE contains a non-zero value, it specifies the number of threads can be used to perform the background collection. The variable is set to 15 by default.

CDP_DP_REFRESH_INTERVAL is the setting that determines how frequently data will be collected to update the cache. By default, this is set to 60 seconds.

CDP_DP_CACHE_TTL is the setting that determines how long the values retrieved by the agent will remain valid in the agent's cache. However, data is NOT cleared from the cache when the time expires. If a request comes in after CDP_DP_CACHE_TTL has expired, the agent will attempt to collect the data. If it can collect the data within CDP_DP_IMPATIENT_COLLECTOR_TIMEOUT, the agent will get new data. If collection does not complete in time, the agent will still get the cached data. When this occurs, no data will be displayed in the TEP until CDP_DP_IMPATIENT_COLLECTOR_TIMEOUT expires. By default, CDP_DP_CACHE_TTL is set to 60 seconds and CDP_DP_IMPATIENT_COLLECTOR_TIMEOUT is set to 5 seconds.

The agent builder agent collects performance statistics about its background collections and stores the data in the KXX_THREAD_POOL_STATUS attribute group. The information stored can help tune background collection when background data collection is enabled.
