The recording for this call is available below, along with an index summarizing the questions and answers. For complete details, please review the recording.
You can also review questions posted in advance and follow-ups in the following thread in the Sametime discussion forum: http://www.lotus.com/ldd/stforum.nsf/DateAllThreadedweb/4b146c0ac10f3a9f85257626006e31d4 Recording details Audio: MP3 file, size 6,509,978 bytes

| Time | Summary of question (Q) and answer (A) | | 00:00:00 | Introduction | | 00:01:38 | Q: We have both a Domino Directory and LDAP directory, so a user name can exist in both directories with the same name and e-mail address. Therefore, we can see conflicts.
A: Yes, that is expected behavior if you set up your server that way. You should pick only one directory as the user repository. | | 00:03:27 | Q: When will a version of Sametime be released that is supported with Domino 8.5?
A: When Sametime 8.5 is released, planned for Q4 2009, it will be supported with Domino 8.5. A good source for product release and feature information is The Sametime Blog. | | 00:04:32 | Q: Using Sametime 8.0.2 and LDAP directory type, some users are disconnected if the Home Server field is not filled out in the Person document. Will future releases change how Home Server field is used?
A: With LDAP, you have to set the Sametime Home Server field. This configuration is not specific to any version; architecturally that's how we pull the Sametime server data from LDAP, and there are no plans to change at this time. | | 00:08:11 | Q: We have a Sametime server with multiple network cards. While we have configured to bind to only one network card, Sametime is still binding to a second card.
A: Review the steps in “Forcing a Sametime server with multiple NICs to bind to the correct IP address” (#1181387). If not resolved, open a service request with IBM Support to troubleshoot. | | 00:10:40 | Q: Are there plans for Sametime to support multiple LDAP servers? Right now if you use multiple ones, Sametime doubles up the directory listing. It does not use one as a primary and other as failover.
A: No, not in plan. Sametime expects the LDAP environment to provide failover function, such as by use of load balancers, sprayers, round robin DNS, and so on. | | 00:13:20 | Q: Using iNotes Web Access, when users click Chat to show the instant contact list, an error 404 occurs. How can we resolve?
A: Review the following documents to check the iNotes configuration:
| | 00:15:33 | Q: My users' workstation do not have access to a C: drive to write to that temp directory, so I cannot use the built-in features to install plug-ins or patches to the Sametime Connect 8.0.2 client. Can I use scripts and a third-party app to do the plug-in install?
A: You can package the plug-ins, and through a method called provisioning application, you can deploy it via any distribution software like SMS or Altiris. For details, refer to the response posted in the Sametime forum. | | 00:17:17 | Q: For Sametime Advanced, I have changed the mail attribute but the search panel does not reflect that change; I cannot search on the new e-mail field. How can I update the configuration?
A: There are a number of areas to check to make sure the change is registered. Please refer to this question and its responses in the forum for things to check. | | 00:18:54 | Q: I am planning an upgrade to Sametime 8 and will still be using Limited Use. Any advice or things to look for? Also, can you install Lotus Notes Traveler and Blackberry server on the same server as Sametime?
A: Check the Sametime Information Center for Upgrade topics. For Notes Traveler setup, see technote 1301513. For other server applications, consider performance implications. It is recommended to have a separate server for Sametime, for best reliability and availability. | | 00:23:55 | Q: Will server-side chat logging feature be in any future release?
A: We are not aware of any plans. There is a proof of concept that is an unsupported feature. IBM Business Partners and third parties offer solutions for this area. | | 00:25:35 | Q: Are there differences in function between the Sametime Connect client and the Sametime embedded in the Lotus Notes client? For example, can I run a scheduled meeting or an instant meeting from Notes?
A: The clients are essentially the same as regards to feature. Be aware that licensing and policies can affect what features a user sees, such as voice chat or screen capture tool. For more information, refer to
| | 00:28:54 | Q: Due to an acquisition, we want to communicate between two Sametime servers. Any way to connect two communities other than the Sametime Gateway?
A: Yes, "What is required for Sametime community awareness and chat to work on multiple servers?" (#1099910) outlines the requirements to do this communication between two distinct communities with two distinct LDAP directories. Also see "How a Sametime server establishes a community connection with other Sametime servers" (#1206752). | | 00:32:30 | Q: We are moving to the Sametime integrated in Notes and removing Sametime Connect from workstations. Is there a way to record an individual's configuration choices and set the same preferences for the Notes client as were in Sametime Connect?
A: There is no known or supported way to capture each individual's user preference then restore these preferences to the different client type. You can use policies and ini settings to set general defaults, but some users might need to select their preferences again in Notes. You can experiment with restoring the plugin customization ini file for a user, but that method is untested and unsupported. | | 00:37:14 | Q: We are removing SiteMinder authentication from our environment. We know to inform users that meetings will require a password and a user account for login after this change. Any advice for what else to look for to limit the impact to users?
A: You covered the main points in the plan you described. If you haven't already, reviewing SiteMinder's documentation on removal could be helpful. | | 00:39:39 | Q: If a file posted for a Sametime meeting, and so put in stconf.nsf, is infected by a virus, when does a check by an anti-virus program occur? If the anti-virus program deletes the file, what is the impact to Sametime?
A: For the third-party software we are familiar with, anti-virus scanning of Sametime occurs on file transmittal. If the anti-virus program scans the hard drive, then there's a directory beneath the Sametime directory where the file is held during conversion and could be scanned. If anti-virus deletes the file, there is no crash but the Files tab might be grayed out. | | 00:45:24 | Q: Is it possible to do a phased approach if converting from Domino to LDAP for Sametime? Or must you cutover all users all at once? What tools can be used for such a large-scale conversion?
A: Not really. It would be difficult to do a phased cutover and keep track of which infrastructure to reference to give the correct contacts to a user. Sametime has a name change utility to do this conversion, and there are third-party tools as well. Testing the conversion in a lab or test environment is a best practice. | | 00:49:56 | Q: We see instances where a user appears online but is not, namely a phantom session. What can we check?
A: There is a known issue; see “User appears online after logging out of Sametime” (#1313012). If integrating with other products, too long an idle time setting can cause the session to stay active longer than expected. To adjust the times, check the STLinks settings in the sametime.ini. | | | | | | | | | |
