Why is the IBM Workplace Managed Client installed during the Lotus Notes for Linux install?

Technote (FAQ)

Question

Why is the IBM® Workplace Managed Client™ installed when the Lotus Notes® client for Linux® is installed?

Answer

Lotus Notes for Linux uses technology from IBM Workplace Managed Client. In order to use this technology, a smaller version of Workplace Managed Client is installed first, and then Lotus Notes.

A typical Workplace Managed Client install may include messaging, document libraries and other Workplace applications. The Workplace applications have been removed from Workplace Managed Client for the Lotus Notes on Linux release. NOTE: The functionality to upgrade the Workplace Managed Client installed with Notes for Linux is planned for a future release of Workplace™ Collaboration Services.

Supporting Information:
When starting Lotus Notes, Workplace Managed Client starts, and then the Notes Client starts. Since the Workplace Managed Client starts first, the splash screen that displays during startup shows "IBM Workplace Managed Client" and not "Lotus Notes Client".
