Clustering the Domino Resource Reservations database

Technote (FAQ)

Question

The Rooms and Resources Manager is designed to prevent overbooking of rooms or resources and is responsible for both the processing of all rooms and resources activities, such as meeting invitations, reschedules or cancellations, and updating the Busytime database accordingly.

Domino has centralized the processing of room and resource reservations into a new Rooms and Resources Manager (RnRMgr) task.

Answer

The Rooms and Resources Manager is designed to prevent overbooking of rooms or resources and is responsible for both the processing of all rooms and resources activities, such as meeting invitations, reschedules or cancellations, and updating the Busytime database accordingly.

The Schedule Manager task no longer maintains busytime for rooms or resources. The Schedule Manager (Sched) processes all user calendar activities and updates the Busytime database accordingly

When using clustering in a Domino environment, you can have a replica on each cluster mate with the RnRMgr task running. However, processing will only occur on the Home server (admin server for the Rooms and Resources database as specified in the ACL > Advanced tab) and the first non-home server in line in the cluster as failover is limited to only two hosts.

The Rooms and Resources Manager task provides automatic failover of request processing when the current processing server fails. The Rooms and Resources Manager typically processes requests on the database's Admin server (as set in the Rooms and Resources database ACL > Advanced Tab). If the Domino server specified as the Admin server for the Rooms and Resources database fails, the Rooms and Resources Manager on the next in line Domino 7 and higher cluster mate detects the server failure and begins processing reservation requests where the failed server left off. The server continues processing, and will hand the processing back to the primary if it goes offline later. This failover ability provides sustained availability for the Rooms and Resources Manager."

Replicas of the Rooms and Resources database can be created on pre-Domino 7 servers only if the following criteria is met:

  • The Router task is not running on the pre-Domino 7 server. (In Domino 7, Router no longer updates the Rooms and Reservations Database.)
  • The pre-Domino 7 server is using the Domino 7 Rooms and Resources template
  • The Rooms and Resources database resides on a Domino 7 server
  • When the list of cluster mates is sorted alphabetically, the pre-Domino 7 server is not one of the first two servers listed.
