I. Notes and Domino 7.0 Supported Configurations

To determine if your configuration is supported, first identify the chart containing the base mail template code level you use. Then, locate the Client
and Server code levels in use with that mail template.

"Supported during upgrade only" means that the configuration is supported for a reasonable amount of time needed to upgrade both products to the newer version. The intention is not to run in this configuration forever. There are no known significant issues, other than the limitations noted; however, IBM Lotus does not intend to create fixes for this configuration, as the expectation is that customer would run in this configuration only during a phased upgrade process. See the recommended Upgrade Path below.

NOTE #1
Please refer to the following technote for information regarding Notes/Domino requirements for the Reschedule option new to 6.0.3 and 6.5, which allows the Chairperson to choose how to reschedule repeating Calendar entries where one or more (but not all) instances of the repeat set have already been rescheduled at least once. This note applies to Notes/Domino 7.0 as well.

NOTE #2
The following features are not available when running a Notes 6 Client with a Notes 6 mail template on a pre-6.0 Domino server; or when running a Notes 7 client with a Notes 7 mail template on a pre-7.0 Domino server.
  • Extract Calendar Details
  • "Access to Your Schedule" tab
    • The new option of "No one may see your schedule information"
    • All options under "What schedule information they may see"
    • Only information about when you are busy or available
    • Detailed information about your calendar entries
    • Only information about when you are busy or available, except the following people may see detailed information
    • Do not include the subject of a calendar entry when detailed information is made available
  • Color Coding Calendar Entries and Mail
  • Bold Unread Marks via Folders
  • Autoprocess Fixes
    • Autoprocessing Repeat Meetings
    • The ability to "let me decide if time is not available"
    • Automatic Inbox Management
  • Enterprise Calendar Management
    • Having meetings that you are invited to forwarded to your assistant
    • Having meetings that you chair forwarded to your assistant
  • iCal and vCard functionality
  • Mail Preferences

NOTE #3
The following Notes/Domino 7.0 features are not available when using a 7.0 mail template on less than a Notes 7.0 client and Domino 7.0 server.
  • Calendar Cleanup
  • Autoprocess Accept meetings even when there is a conflict
  • Recipient Message Marking
  • RnRMgr (Rooms and Resources Manager)

NOTE #4
Although this configuration is supported during an upgrade, there is limited functionality available. For example, users cannot modify mail preferences.

NOTE #5
Although this configuration is supported during an upgrade, there is limited functionality available. For example, users cannot respond to calendaring and scheduling documents.

Additional Notes:
  • Lotus does not support a Notes 7.0 client on a Release 4 server.
  • Lotus does support a Notes 7.0 client on a Release 5 server during the upgrade process. Although this configuration is not recommended.
  • In some cases Lotus does support a Notes client combined with a mail template from a later release (such as, Notes 6 client / Notes 7 Mail template), during the upgrade process. It is not a recommended configuration for long term usage.
  • Users who have Editor access to their mail file will not be able to disable/enable the Out of Office agent if they are using a Notes/Domino 7.0.2 or later mail file design from an earlier Notes client. Refer to the following document for additional details "Status bar error: 'Instance Member CONFIGUREMAILAGENTEXT does not exist' when Editor attempts to enable the Out of Office agent" (1250586 )

* These charts depict supported configurations relating to Release 7.0. The items denoted with * do not include any Release 7.0 component. Therefore, you should refer to previous documentation for support statements on Release 6, Release 5 or Release 4 configurations.

II. Can you run a higher release of the Notes Client than the release of the Domino Server?

Lotus recommends upgrading servers before clients; however, running a Notes client of a higher release than the Domino Server is a supported configuration for sequential code levels (that is, Notes 6 client on Domino 5 server, but not Notes 6 client on Domino 4 server). With functionality such as Calendaring & Scheduling and Mail features, caution should be used when running a higher release of the Notes client and mailfile design on a lower release of the Domino server. Most functionality an end user will expect is coded into the Client and mail template, but some functionality is held on the Server. Therefore, functions that require server-side code, will not function properly without it.

III. What about an Administrative Assistant managing another person's Calendar?

When one person opens another person's mailfile to manage his/her calendar, there is essentially a change in the configuration that is now being used. No longer is one individual's configuration being used but a combination of both individuals. You must determine that combination and then refer to the Supported Configurations chart at the top to see if the scenario is a supported one.

For example: When an Administrative Assistant goes into a Manager's mailfile to manage his/her calendar, the combined configuration that is now being used is the client of the Administrative Assistant and the server and mail template of the Manager. In other words:

Administrative Assistant
Manager
Managed Calendar Configuration
Notes 7.0 Client
works in the
Notes 6.x Client
Notes 7.0 Client
refer to the chart at top to
<= determine if this is a supported configuration (answer: yes)
Domino 7.0 Server
calendar of =>
Domino 6.x Server
results in =>
Domino 6.x Server
7.0 Mail Template
6.x Mail Template
6.x Mail Template
It is important to note there will be certain limitations based on the code that is being used. For instance, in the example above, the Managed Calendar configuration uses a Domino 6 server. A new feature of Notes/Domino 7.0 is Calendar Filtering. This feature relies on code that is in the Notes 7.0 template. Therefore, an Administrative Assistant working in the calendar of a Manager with this configuration will not see the Filter option.

IV. The Resource Reservations (R&R) Database

Any supported version of the Notes client can use the Notes 7.0 R&R template (subject to any previous restrictions) and get the benefit of the new RnRMgr (Rooms and Resources Manager) feature. Unsupported clients can reserve rooms or resources only from C&S. There is nothing in the R&R template (Resrc7.ntf) that is Notes 7.0 specific. For C&S users, there is no change in behavior.

RnRMgr (Rooms and Resources Manager) runs only on Domino 7.0 servers. This means that the "Home Server" of the R&R database must be a Domino 7.0 server. In the past we have recommended that R&R be put on its own server. If customers have followed this recommendation then all they need to upgrade is that server and they will get the immediate benefits of the new R&R system for all of their clients.

We now allow cluster replicas of the R&R database. The clustermates can be any version of Domino. The only limitation to this is that pre-7.0 Domino servers MUST NOT run a Router task because pre-7.0 Domino Routers still have autoprocessing agents in them and 'alternate mail delivery' by the Router could cause requests to get processed incorrectly during delivery on the clustermate. This will cause problems with R&R!

V. What is Lotus' recommended Upgrade Path?

In all cases, it is important that you follow the upgrade guidelines to ensure minimum feature loss with Mail and Calendaring & Scheduling.

1. Upgrade the Notes Clients that administrators will use to edit and operate on the Public Address Book/Domino Directory.
2. Upgrade the Public Address Book/Domino Directory first (this is done by upgrading the Domino server that is the Administration Server of the Public
Address Book/Domino Directory to Domino 7.0 first).
3. Replicate the Domino Directory to the other servers.*
4. Upgrade the Hub servers.
5. Upgrade the Mail servers.
6. Upgrade the SMTP servers.
7. Upgrade the Web servers.
8. Upgrade the Application servers.
9. Any third-party/companion product server (check for Notes/Domino Release 7.0 readiness).
10. Upgrade the general population of clients to Notes 7.0.
11. Replace the design of any databases/mailfiles with any new Notes/Domino Release 7.0 design changes last. For mailfiles, the Convert task should be used on the server to change the design of the mailfile.
