Abstract
WebSphere test environment hangs during startup after applying WebSphere Application Server V5.1.1.4 or PK01688.

Download Description
PK08581 resolves the following problem:

ERROR DESCRIPTION:
If WebSphere Application Server is upgraded to V5.1.1.4 in the WebSphere Business Integration Server Foundation embedded WebSphere Test Environment of the WebSphere Studio Application Developer Integration Edition V5.1.1 development tool, the WebSphere Test Environment becomes unusable.

Installation of the WebSphere Application Server V5.1.1.4 service pack into the WebSphere Business Integration Server Foundation WebSphere Test Environment will complete without errors, but when you try to start the WebSphere Test Environment, the server indicates that it is starting but will remain indefinitely in this state, and never moves to the ´started´ state. This prevents the starting of the Business Process Web Client, Administrative Console, Universal Test Client and other critical services, rendering the WebSphere Test Environment unusable.

PK01688 modifies the timing of the WebSphere Application Server Base and Network Deployment launch programs, which adversely affects the launch program of the WebSphere Test Environment.

The purpose of this APAR is provide an Interim Fix to reinstate the timing behavior of the Base and ND launch programs within in the WebSphere Application Server version 5.1.1 service stream.

USERS AFFECTED:
WebSphere Application Server Developers using the WebSphere Test Environment in or WebSphere Studio Application Developer Integration Edition.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
When launching an application server within the WebSphere Test Environment of WebSphere Studio Application Developer/WebSphere Studio Application Developer Integration Edition, the WebSphere Test Environment never indicates that the server has started, and the WebSphere Test Environment becomes unusable.

RECOMMENDATION:
The aberrant behavior results from the timing of the launch programs the WebSphere Application Server Base and Network Deployment, which was modified in version 5.1.1.4 to exit immediately upon launching a server process.

PROBLEM CONCLUSION:
Apply Interim Fix PK08581 to resolve this problem. The interim fix applies to WebSphere Application Server Base and Network Deployment products versions 5.1.1.4 and 5.1.1.5. FixPack 5.1.1.6 also contains the modification.

Please refer to the recommended updates page for delivery information:
http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=180&uid=swg27004980
