IGD17051I Allocation failed for data set primary space

Question & Answer

Question

IEF344I DPJ674A ICOPY002 CPLP0003 - ALLOCATION failed due to data facility system error; primary space exceeds 65535 TRKS.

Answer

When DB2 Automation Tool builds a job to do an Image Copy of all of
the user table spaces within a subsystem, the job could fail with the following error message:

    IEF344I DPJ674A ICOPY002 CPLP0003 - ALLOCATION FAILED DUE TO DATA
    FACILITY SYSTEM ERROR
IGD17051I ALLOCATION FAILED FOR DATA SET
    DB2IC.DB2I.GROUP03.OSMOTS32.BU.IC.G0110V00 , PRIMARY SPACE EXCEEDS
    65535 TRKS

The reason this error occurs is because it is not possible to allocate storage for sequential files that are greater than 65,000 tracks. The only files that can extend past 65,000 tracks are:
  • Hierarchical File System (HFS)
  • Extended format sequential
  • Partitioned data set extended (PDSE)
  • VSAM

The workaround to this problem is to create a storage group with extended attributes. After the extended attributes have been added to his SMS storage group, the problem should be resolved.

Same problem with // UNIT=(3390,5),VOL=SER=(RYSHW0,RYSHW1,RYSHW2,RYSHW3,RYSHW4), // SPACE=(CYL,(4369,4369)), =[greater than] add // DSNTYPE=LARGE and Rerun OK
