Content
Two problems with the Performance Manager function of Tivoli Storage Productivity Center version 4.1.1.55 have been identified and fixed. These will be addressed in Tivoli Storage Productivity Center 4.1.1 fix pack 1. Until that fix pack is available, temporary fixes can be obtained in patch format by opening a ticket with IBM support. Both fixes can be obtained and applied together.

#1 - APAR IC64141
Performance Manager service does not start after upgrade

In rare cases, the Performance Manager service will fail initialization when upgrading to Tivoli Storage Productivity Center 4.1.1.55 with one or more previously defined performance alerts. The Performance Manager status will show with a red indicator in the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center navigation tree under Administrative Services > Services > Device Server > Performance Manager and not be listed as running. Other services are not be affected by this and will be listed as running.

If the Performance Manager fails to start, functions such as performance data collection (monitoring) and performance data reports will not work.

If you experience this behavior after upgrading to Tivoli Storage Productivity Center 4.1.1.55, you will need to upgrade to 4.1.1 fix pack 1 or apply a temporary fix. 4.1.1 fix pack 1 is planned to be available in December 2009. Before that time, the temporary fix can be obtained by contacting IBM support and referencing APAR IC64141.

#2 - APAR IC64304
Performance monitoring problems for DS8000 with older microcode levels

With Tivoli Storage Productivity Center version 4.1.1.55, performance monitoring of DS8000 storage subsystems with a microcode version between 5.4.2.1 and 5.4.3.51 can encounter invalid performance statistics returned by the subsystem. The invalid data will cause performance monitor sample intervals to be deemed invalid and discarded. Discarded sample intervals are indicated via message HWNM2124W. For example:
HWNPM2124W Performance data continuity has been broken. The device might have been reset or rebooted. 556 performance data records were discarded.

In addition, the By Volume, By Array, By Controller, or By Storage Subsystem performance reports may fail to display properly and show the following error message.
GEN7022E: A server error occurred while retrieving performance data.

If you experience this behavior after upgrading to or installing Tivoli Storage Productivity Center 4.1.1.55, and it is not feasible to upgrade the DS8000 to the corrected microcode version 5.4.3.52 (bundle 64.30.78.0) or higher, you will need to upgrade to 4.1.1 fix pack 1 or apply a temporary fix. 4.1.1 fix pack 1 is planned to be available in December 2009. Before that time, a temporary fix can be obtained by contacting IBM support and referencing APAR IC64304. If you see the GEN7022E error when viewing the reports listed above after applying 4.1.1 fix pack 1, contact IBM support for further investigation.
