Abstract
The IBM Advanced Linguistic Search Plug-in for Adobe may be used to perform advanced full text searches on Adobe® Portable Document Format (PDF) files that have been enabled with the IBM Advanced Linguistic Search Index.

When installed as a plug-in to either the free Adobe Reader® or the priced Adobe Acrobat®, the IBM Advanced Linguistic Search Plug-in for Adobe provides the following functions, over and above the existing search/find functions natively provided by Adobe:
- Searches are linguistic in nature (i.e. morphologically based). For example, a search term of "old" will produce a results hitlist of all PDF topics in which any of the terms "old", "oldest", "older" or "elder" appear
- Selecting any topic in the hitlist displays the topic with all occurrences of the search term and/or its linguistic derivations highlighted
- The end user may specify whether topics in the hitlist should be listed in either sequential order, or in ranked (based on significance) order
- The end user may specify whether the search scope should consist of topic titles, topic contents, or both
- The end user may specify whether search term matching should be exact with case sensitivity, exact without case sensitivity or fuzzy (i.e. morphological)
The IBM Advanced Linguistic Search Plug-in for Adobe works either when Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) is itself running as a plug-in to a 32-bit web browser, or is running in stand-alone mode. The former is typically the case when the Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) is launched by the Library Server for z/OS product for a PDF in its Shelf Search Results List. The later is typically the case when the Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) is launched by the Softcopy Reader tool for a PDF in its Shelf Quick Search Results List. In either case, the Advanced Linguistic Search Plug-in is automatically launched to apply the search criteria to the selected PDF at the client machine.
When Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) is run as a plug-in to a 32-bit web browser, the Advanced Linguistic Search Plug-in may be launched directly by the end user to perform additional searches at the client machine by choosing the Advanced Linguistic Search selection from the Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) Context Menu that is presented after right-clicking on any open PDF page.
When Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) is run stand-alone, the Advanced Linguistic Search Plug-in may be launched directly by the end user to perform additional searches at the client machine by choosing the Advanced Linguistic Search selection from the Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) Edit Menu, or Context Menu that is presented after right-clicking on any open PDF page.
The latest version (V1.5.1) of the IBM Advanced Linguistic Search Plug-in for Adobe is intended for use with Adobe Reader V10 or V11, or Adobe Acrobat V10 or V11 running on Windows XP or Windows 7. Since the V1.5.1 plug-in has been demonstrated to work with Adobe Reader DC and Adobe Acrobat DC,
a special download is provided for installation within DC, however, full support is not claimed for the V1.5.1 plug-in with Adobe Reader DC or Adobe Acrobat DC.
It is recommended to use V1.4.1 of the IBM Advanced Linguistic Search Plug-in with Adobe Reader V9 or Adobe Acrobat V9, V1.4 of the IBM Advanced Linguistic Search Plug-in with Adobe Reader V8 or Adobe Acrobat V8, and to use V1.3 with Adobe Reader V7 or Adobe Acrobat V7, running on Windows XP or Windows 7.
For Adobe Reader V9 and Adobe Acrobat V9, starting with V9.3.3 it may be necessary to download and re-install the latest packaging of V1.4.1 from this site if the original download and installation results in a message indicating that "eflnl27w.dll was not found" is issued by Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) at startup, or if Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) crashes after attempting to perform a search using the IBM Advanced Linguistic Search Plug-in for Adobe,
Versions 1.5.1, 1.4.1, 1.4 and 1.3 of the IBM Advanced Linguistic Search Plug-in for Adobe are all available at this site.
Once installed, the IBM Advanced Linguistic Search Plug-in for Adobe can be used to perform linguistic-based searches on Adobe PDFs that have been enabled with an IBM Advanced Linguistic Search Index. Such enabled PDFs are currently available:
- Via the "Manage Document Indexes" administrative function of IBM Library Server for z/OS
- In the z/OS and Software Products DVD Collection (SK3T-4271)
- In the z/VM Collection on DVD (SK5T-7054)
- In many of the IBM z/OS and z/VM pubs stored on the IBM Publib z/OS V1R9 LibraryCenter (or later)
To see how this works:
- You will need either the free Adobe Reader (Link resides outside ibm.com) or Adobe Acrobat (Full, Standard, or Professional) installed on your workstation. Adobe V11, V10, V9, V8 or V7 is required.
- Once you have Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) installed, download the appropriate version of the IBM Advanced Linguistic Search plug-in from one of the the links on this page (V1.5.1 for Adobe V10 or V11, V1.4.1 for Adobe V9, V1.4 for Adobe V8, or V1.3 for Adobe V7)
- Launch the following sample PDF file (PDF, 1.98MB) from Publib in a 32-bit browser, and search for the term "elder" after choosing the Advanced Linguistic Search item from the Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) Context Menu that is presented after right-clicking any open PDF page.
