IBM Lotus Support Engineers and Development hosted a Support Technical Exchange Open Mic call with customers on the topic of Lotus iNotes 8.5 on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time (2:00 PM GMT). Below are the questions, answers and recording of that call.

Questions and Answers from the Open Mic call:

02:36

Q: What is the hotfix for 8.0.2?

A: iNotes hotfixes are cumulative hotfixes. It is important note that iNotes hotfixes are typically not included in Domino fixpacks. For this type of support, you would need the iNotes cumulative hotfix as well as Domino fixpack 1 (FP1). The iNotes hotfix is built on top of the Domino fixpack. Many of the iNotes hotfixes are available on Fix Central.

04:05

Q: Right now on iNotes 8.5 you are supporting the iPhone browser. Will other devices be supported?

A: Currently, the plans for supporting other devices are being determined. We are prioritizing, so input from our customers is actually what we are looking for. If you have something you are considering, please send us that input. We want to hear from you as we look at where we are going next. You can post your requests in the Notes/Domino 8 Forum.

08:55

Q: What are the new features in iNotes 8.5.1?

A: There is a lot coming for 8.5.1 and many improvements to all of the iNotes modes. Some of the big changes are:

1. The ID vault will help with synchronization with ID files which will allow secure mail deployment.
2. There will be type-ahead for all address fields as in Lotus Notes with access to lists.
3. Folder unread counts will be available in iNotes 8.5.1.
4. Preview pane actions which will allow you to accept or decline meeting invitations.
5. New enhancements for policies and auto Inbox refresh.
6. New support for ultra-light mode plain text signature.
7. New calendar improvements featuring auto time zone detector and view invitee status for currently scheduled meetings.

15:20

Q: We have a few users on iNotes 8.5. When they adjust the columns, it doesn't save the changes.

A: When a user logs out and back in to iNotes, the column settings will change back to the default. There is no policy setting to preset the width.

Q: Was this something that worked in version 7?

A: We are quite certain this was not supported in version 7.
**************************************************************************************************************************

17:54

Q: I was wondering if HTML signatures will be supported in iNotes 8.5. If not, will it be supported in the future?

A: iNotes supports its own HTML signature. You can copy and paste the HTML code through iNotes preferences and provide it to the HTML signature. For images in signatures, add the image to the Notes client and it will be available in iNotes through preferences under the Signature tab. Under the signature tab in iNotes, you can choose the Notes signature.

24:10

Q: We have an 8.0.2 environment. We moved a couple of our mail files with the 8.0.2 template to an 8.5 test environment and were pleasantly surprised to discover the iNotes UI was the full 8.5 UI even though the mail template was at 8.0.2. Is that something that is supported or would we have to install the 8.0.2 files for compatibility?

A: With 8.5 we do not install the older versions of the iNotes form files. What you are seeing is expected behavior. The mail file will run with the forms file that is on the server. So in this case, it is version 8.5 and obviously an 8.5 UI is supported by an 8.5 server.

Q: Is the iNotes 8.5 template fully supported with the 8.0.2 Notes client?

A: It is a supported configuration and we do have several technotes on this topic. It is a configuration we recommend only when you are upgrading your clients.

27:53

Q: Earlier in the call you spoke about fixpacks not including hotfixes. Could you please clarify this? We were under the assumption that Fixpacks included hotfixes.

A: When we have to send a fixpack out, it is usually server fixes which excludes client fixes and iNotes is a client. This is due to the fact that we translate into so many different languages. That is why we include the cumulative hotfix method. Because a fixpack only has server fixes, we do not go into the fixpack due to translation issues.

32:28

Q: We are a 8.5 server shop using Notes 7. We're in the process of doing an upgrade to the 8.5 client. One concern we had was, other than using the ID vault, do you have any recommendations for remote management and reset of HTTP passwords? Some of our users will become full time iNotes users.

A: Right now there is a policy to keep passwords in sync. The HTTP password would update when your Notes ID changes through your adminp requests and update the Person documents.

Q: If a non Notes 8 user eventually becomes an iNotes user, will the policy change keep up-to-date?

A: Yes. The user will have only one change password button in iNotes which will change the HTTP password at the same time to keep passwords in sync.
**************************************************************************************************************************

35:13

Q: I would like to hear more about the auto time zone changer.

A: For iNotes 8.5.1, we have added auto time zone changer to ultra-light mode as well. It will detect time zones on the iPhone or Ipod Touch. As you move around with the phone, it will understand and detect the current time zone from the cell it is in and adjust what you are looking at appropriately and automatically for you.
**************************************************************************************************************************

36:37

Q: We are currently in an 8.0 environment and we are moving to 8.5. We added a help desk button to the forms.8 file but we do not see the button in iNotes 8.5. Could you expand upon the customization files?

A: The extensions forms file mentioned earlier is an 8.5.1 feature which allows you to separate this kind of customization into a separate forms file, specifically designed for customization. As you update your releases you do not have to update your customization.
**************************************************************************************************************************

41:09

Q: We get the error "The installation of Domino Web Access Control has been blocked" and we have issues installing activex. Are there any updates to this issue?

A: This error should only occur if your environment is locked down. Make sure you do not have an old activex in Internet Explorer. You can also post the issue in the Notes/Domino 8 Forum and we can try and reproduce the issue to try to find a resolution.
**************************************************************************************************************************

45:28

Q: Are all browsers equally supported in iNotes, such as drag and drop?

A: iNotes does support FireFox 3.5 starting in 7.0.4 and 8.0.2. when used with an iNotes hotfix. Internet Explorer 8 is supported in 7.0.4 and 8.0.2 without a hotfix. Drag and drop support is unique to Internet Explorer.
**************************************************************************************************************************

46:50

Q: Are you planning to remove the requirement to download a file to log into Sametime in iNotes?

A: Yes. Through iNotes 8.5.1, the stlinks component is required. In subsequent releases, we are planning on the web API interface, which will not require downloading the stlinks file.

Q: Earlier you were talking about synchronization of passwords. It was my understanding when you had Notes shared logon turned on, that you could not share those passwords. Did that change in 8.5.1?

A: iNotes users, through their iNotes preferences, use the Security tab to update the Notes password for the ID file. If the sync password policy is enabled on the server, it will sync the Notes ID password with the HTTP password.
**************************************************************************************************************************

51:31

Q: I have a question about customization regarding iNotes light mode. We have a customized form in our mail file. When I switch to light mode in iNotes 8.5, a memo is opened in light mode while my custom form is still opened in the classic mode. Where do I define my customization so my form is also opened in light mode?

A: Starting with 8.5, we provided the customization design elements for the light mode forms. You will have to update the specific forms to mimic exactly what you did in your full mode forms. For more information, visit the Lotus iNotes wiki customization section.
**************************************************************************************************************************

53:33

Q: Any news on when Lotus Live iNotes will become available?

A: Lotus Live iNotes is a separate product. Right now, integration with Lotus Live iNotes and Lotus iNotes is a separate effort. Currently, we do not have a time table on availability.
**************************************************************************************************************************

54:31

Q: When Sametime 8.5 is released, how much integration will there be with the iNotes client? Such as calendaring and video conference, which is currently integrated with the Notes client.

A: Right now what we support with iNotes and Sametime integration will be maintained. Once we evolve our integration with the new web API, we will explicitly make changes to incorporate the new Sametime integration.
**************************************************************************************************************************

56:06

Q: In iNotes 8.5, if you try and open two different databases, they appear in two different Internet Explorer windows.

A: If you open two different iNotes sessions, it will open two different Internet Explorer windows. This seems to be a limitation of the web browser. You can configure your browser to use new tabs instead of new windows. You would not see another new window. You would see a new tab in the existing window.
**************************************************************************************************************************

01:00:04

Q: We have a lot of webmail users and have issues with renames and OU certifiers. This has to be done manually. Is there anything to address these kinds of issues?

A: The administrative process of renaming a user is integrated with iNotes. iNotes has a Notes ID attached to the mail file. The mail file ACL will get updated with the new user name. This should work using the server adminp process. The Notes ID file that is attached to iNotes will update itself.
**************************************************************************************************************************

1:04:03

Q: Earlier you mentioned a mail management view for iNotes. I am interested as to when this will be implemented in ultra-light mode.

A: This will be implemented in iNotes 8.5.1.
