Modified Camtasia course description not reflected in My Learning Course Catalog

 Technote (FAQ)

Question
In IBM Workplace Collaborative Learning 2.7, you modify a course description in a course master and create a new course offering from the updated master. The updated description is reflected in the Offerings catalog view but not in the Course Catalog view.
The issue appears to be specific to Camtasia courses. Courses created with other 3rd-party software are working fine.

When you import and register the Camtasia courses into Workplace Learning using the Course Upload portlet, you notice that the Description field is not populated with the description from the imsmanifest.xml file for the course. You manually enter text for the description. This seems to be the description always displayed in the Course Catalog view even though the modified description is displayed in the Master Catalog and the Offerings catalog.

Cause
The imsmanifest.xml file defines strings using multiple different languages. In this case, there are references for "en", "en-US', and "x-none" in the imsmanifest.xml file. Therefore, multiple MASTER_TEXT records are created for the course.
When you manually enter the description, another MASTER_TEXT record is created. This one appears to take precedence over all other records when the course details are displayed in the Course Catalog view.

Answer
You can work around this issue by modifying the imsmanifest.xml file to reference only "x-none" as the langstring. Then repackage the course and import it again into Workplace Learning.
If you have too many courses to manually modify, Camtasia Support suggests that you modify the template manifest file. For example, if you are producing to Express Show FLV or MP4, you can modify the template manifest files at the following location: C:\Program Files\<user>\Camtasia Studio 6\Media\Studio\HTML\ExpressShow\flv

Go into the appropriate SCORM folder and edit the imsmanifest file.

The change only affects future courses. For existing courses, you must republish (produce) them using the modified template and import them again to Workplace Learning.
