About userinst.exe

Technote (FAQ)

What does the IBM Installation Manager executable userinst.exe do?

Userinst.exe is an install executable that was introduced in Installation Manager version 1.2.0.

The executable is identical to install.exe, but userinst.exe uses different access rights to install Installation Manager. Since userinst.exe uses different access rights, non-administrator users can use it to install non-admin enabled products to their machine without the need of administrator permission.

The below table displays the differences between userinst.exe and install.exe.

Since userinst.exe and install.exe install Installation Manager into different directories, changes in administrator's Installation Manager copy do not affect non-administrator's and vice versa.

  1. Administrator users can use userinst.exe to install IBM Installation Manager on their system, but they cannot use Installation Manager to install non-admin enabled products such as Rational Application Developer 7.0.x and Rational Software Architect 7.0.x.
  2. Installed products and shared resource directory cannot be shared with different Installation Manager instances.
