Cross-product shared environments (shell sharing) information about IBM Software

 Technote (FAQ)

Question
What are the cross-product integrations among the IBM Software products and each other (shell sharing)?

Answer

Shared environment (also known as shell-share): When multiple Eclipse-based products are installed within the same package group, the offerings share their set of common and compatible features (for example, Eclipse 3.2) that are installed by the IBM Installation Manager (IIM). Since these features are shared between the products, updating them through the IIM for one product updates them for all the products. Therefore, updates are allowed or restricted by the dependency requirements set out by each product. An indication of shell-sharing is that when running one of the products, the user interface and features contributed by the other products are also visible.

Coexistence: When two products are installed in different package groups, they do not share the same resources. A user can choose to install products in different package groups for many reasons: the products may have the ability to share resources, but there is a need to keep them separate, or the two products that cannot share resources (for example, Eclipse 3.2 and Eclipse 3.3 based products will not be able to shell-share). In a coexistence scenario, each product independently updates all of its own features through the IIM. Additionally, you only see the user interface and features contributed by the product that is launched, and not those of any of the other products.

Extensions: Product extensions are installed by the IIM, and deliver features without delivering the complete stand-alone Eclipse environment. Instead, they require an existing product to be present to fulfill its dependencies. Because product extensions share dependencies with their prerequisite products, they can only be installed into the same package group.

There are other product extensions that are not installed by the IIM. These extensions have the same requirements around sharing and controlling common dependencies, but since they are not managed through the IIM, the user must be aware of compatibility between underlying product updates and the extensions.
