De-link Assets from original hierarchy in Maximo 6.2.x and 7.x

Question & Answer

Question

How to de-link assets from itsoriginal hierarchy?

Cause

In Maximo 6.2.4 plus any further Maximo 6.2.x versions as well as Maximo 7.x this behaviour is different than before and its new functionality was included as part of an enhancement .

Answer

When an asset in the middle of the hierarchy is moved from location A to Location B, it will be de-linked from the original hierarchy used to set up a new hierarchy.
This will start from the Asset that was moved to another Location all up and inclusive of all its children

To explain the solution ,we use the following example:

1) Create Asset 1, which resides in Location A
2) Create Asset 2, which resides in Location B
3) Make Asset 1 as parent of Asset 2
4) E.g in Maximo 7.1.1.5 ,it automatically changes the Location of Asset 2 to Location A, which is fine.
5) Later, if Asset 2 is moved from Location A to B, Maximo still retains the hierarchy with the Parent. Asset 1 residing at Location B and the child Asset 2 residing at Location B.
N.B!: "Maintain Hierarchy" flag has not been set for this functionality to take effect.
The Maintain Hierarchy flag in the Assets application itself is typically used by the hierarchy to prevent child assets being removed from it's parent.

This observed behaviour is included in Maximo 6.2.4 and further as well as Maximo 7.x and further as part of an enhancement (= FITS) that was done in Maximo 6.2.x
In the above steps as example, in step 5 when you move Asset 2 to a different location, you have the option to retain the parent or remove the parent.
De-linking the parent can be achieved by clearing the "To Parent" field while moving the asset from A to B in the Asset Move/Modify dialogue.
