Search and Browse portlet search result also returns seemingly unrelated words.
While using the Search and Browse portlet, the user types the word "Julie" to search a collection. Results also return links containing the word "July."
This is working as designed.
Resolving the problem
This is a not a bug. This issue is an effect of the word stemming used by WebSphere® Portal, merely a heuristic for removing morphological suffixes from a word. Therefore, "Julie" and "July" have the same word stem of "Jul" and are awarded the same relevance.
For example, a stemming algorithm reduces the words "fishing," "fished," "fish," and "fisher" to the root word "fish". If one wants to search for the word in a specific form, it should be put it in quotation marks. This method of search ranking is the state of the art in many popular search engines available today.
