Error description

  • VM/VTAM does not currently support four digit channel unit
    addresses. VM59440 identified a publication change to document
    this limitation for VM/VTAM. However, if a user codes a four
    digit address the definition does not fail - instead they see
    sense code 081C0008 at CTCA activation. The sense code used
    and the fact that it is seen at activation time does not help
    at all in identifying the problem as the four digit definition.
    Either function needs to be added to support four digit channel
    unit addresses or they should be failed at definition time.
    ADDITIONAL SYMPTOMS:
    IST363I CONFIG nodename NODES AND SUBNODES SET UNAVAILABLE -
    INVALID VALUE
    IST323I LABEL = name - MACRO TYPE = LINE - KEYWORD = ADDRESS

Problem summary

    * USERS AFFECTED: All attempting to use 4-digit channel unit *

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: A channel attached major node contains *
    *                      a definition with a channel unit        *
    * address having 4 digits. When the *
    * channel is activated it fails with *
    *                      sense code 081C0008.                    *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    VM/VTAM allows you to define a 4-digit address for a channel to
    channel connection, but when that connection is activated it
    fails with sense code 081C0008 because the leading digit is
    truncated.

Problem conclusion

  • Although VM supports 4-digit channel unit addresses, VM/VTAM
    does not. This APAR fails a 4-digit address at definition time
    rather than waiting for activation.

    As part of investigating this APAR an evaluation was made of the
    effort required to modify VM/VTAM to add 4-digit CUA support.
    The effort was deemed too extensive to implement in this APAR,
    but the evaluation is documented in requirement VTA2076800 for
    future reference. (The requirement has been investigated
    and the decision was made not to implement it.)
