How to Obtain DAMO
For DAMO releases 6.5.2 and above, including DAMO 7.0.x, the executable is available under the domino\data\domino\html\DAO directory of the Domino server. The DAMO release correlates to the Domino Server release.
Note:
If customers want to install a DAMO client that is more recent than the Domino server they are currently running, but do not want to install a more recent Domino server release in their environment, a workaround is to download the Domino server code for the DAMO version desired from Passport Advantage (requires IBM Customer Number), install the server to a test machine, and access the executable in the domino\data\domino\html\DAO directory. See the table at the top of this document for a list of available DAMO releases per Domino server.
Installation notes
For installation information for DAMO 7.0.2 or 7.0.3, refer to the release note titled "Installing Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook" in the corresponding version of the Notes/Domino Release Notes. The release notes ship with the product, but are also available on developerWorks.
For installation of DAMO 6.5.x, follow the steps in one of the following documents, depending on your MS Outlook version:
"Instructions for installing Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook 6.5.x on Outlook 2000" (#1164685)
"Instructions for installing Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook 6.5.x on Outlook 2002 (XP)" (#1166136)
Key Features
The key features added to DAMO 8.0.2 - Support for DAMO in a Citrix environment has been introduced
- Support for Outlook 2007 - DAMO now runs on Outlook 2007 SP1
- Support for Windows Vista - DAMO is supported on the Windows Vista OS.
The key features added to DAMO 6.5.5: Support for Outlook 2003 personal folders (.pst) file size and format
Outlook 2003 has both a different format and a larger overall size limit for the personal folder (.pst) files than in earlier versions of Microsoft Outlook. In Outlook 2002 and earlier, the .pst files are in the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) format, and the overall size has a limit of 2 gigabytes (GB).
In Outlook 2003, .pst files are in the UNICODE format by default, and the overall size of the .pst files has a limit that is more than 20 GB. Outlook 2003 supports both the UNICODE and the ANSI formats, but versions of Outlook that are earlier than Outlook 2003 do not support the UNICODE format, and have a smaller size limit. Mail Rule support
Mail rules must be run by way of the "run now" option in the rules dialog. Alternate Name support
The ability for users to display Alternate Names in their client is supported. Silent Install capability
New flags allow for multi-user install and insertion of Notes.ini parameters: -u John Simpson -s 9.22.35.119 -f C:\IDs\JohnSimpson.id -p password -i STX9=1 -i REPL_PST_DEBUG=1 -i console_log_enabled=1 -d c:\DAMOData\John Simpson
...where the -i parameter can be any value that will be inserted into the user's Notes.ini file.
In this case STX9=1 indicated that the administrator wants to see a console running to display real-time DAMO activity. REPL_PST_DEBUG=1 is the most verbose of DAMO's debugging capabilities. CONSOLE_LOG_ENABLED=1 will cause all debugging data to be captured in a console.log in the IBM_TECHNICAL_SUPPORT folder in the user's data directory.
The -d parameter indicates a multi-user install, and that this user's data directory will be c:\DAMOData\John Simpson. Creating Connection documents
By default, DAMO is able to create a Connection Doc by entering an IP address in the Preferred Server field if the machine is listening on 1352 (running Domino server). To access the Preferred Server field in Outlook, Tools > Options > Domino Preferences > Replication. Local Archiving support
DAMO 6.5.5 allows local archiving using the native Outlook archiving functionality. When items are archived or otherwise moved to another *.pst file in Outlook, DAMO will also remove these items from the server mailfile. In order for these deletions to happen, the *.pst file that the archive movements go to must be open in the Outlook folder list (and will require a restart of Outlook after it is added). Deleting items on archive will NOT remove the corresponding items from the server mailstore. Note: To take advantage of the new features in 6.5.5, users should recreate their profiles after upgrading to DAMO 6.5.5. When a profile is created in Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook 6.5.5, Outlook checks for the existence of the user's local .pst and .nsf files. If they exist, they are renamed using a .sav extension appended to the end, and new data files are created. Also the user's INIT, SETUP, DisplayProgressDone, WelcomeMsgCreated Notes.INI variables will be cleared so that initial replication re-occurs on startup.
For example, a user, Alexander Robins, on server page/acme has a DAMO profile. If he upgrades to 6.5.5 and recreates his profile, the following things occur:
- The file arobinso_page.pst becomes arobinso_page.pst.sav, and a new arobinso_page.pst is created.
- The file arobinso_page.nsf becomes arobinso_page.nsf.sav, and a new arobinso_page.nsf is created.
- The following variables are set in his Notes.INI file:
- arobinso_page_INIT = 0
- arobinso_page_SETUP = 0
- arobinso_page_DisplayProgressDone = 0
-arobinso_page_WelcomeMsgCreated = 0 Key features added to DAMO 6.5.4: - x509-encrypted messages can be received
DAMO users now have the ability to receive x509-encrypted messages. - Launch/shutdown performance improved
The initial launch and shutdown performance of Outlook with DAMO has been improved. - Option to separate Data and Program directories
DAMO now allows customers to install the Data and program directories to separate install locations. Previously, the Data and Program directories were installed to the same location. - New Mail notification
Users now see a system tray icon when new mail arrives in their Inbox. - Offline Address Book support
Users can now perform Address Book look-ups when working offline. Note: All features in the previous releases of DAMO listed below apply also to DAMO 6.5.4. Key features added to DAMO 6.5.3 : - Calendar Delegation. Allows users to manage the mail and calendars of multiple users from within their DAMO client. It will also allow users to grant access to their mail and calendars from Outlook preferences.
- Support for MS Outlook 2003
Note: All DAMO 6.5.1 and 6.5.2 features listed below apply also to DAMO 6.5.3. Key features added to DAMO 6.5.2: - ability to perform a silent installation
- more intelligent and forgiving installation process.
Note: DAMO 6.5.2 (and above) also contains a key fix to a crash that occurs in DAMO 6.5.1. For more information please see the technote, "Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook 6.5.1 - Outlook Crash on Initial Replication after Install" (#1163227).
Note: All features listed below for DAMO 6.5.1 also apply to 6.5.2. Key features added to DAMO 6.5.1: - decryption of Notes and X509 mail
- can use MS Outlook 2000 and MS Outlook XP against a Domino 6.5 or 6.0.3 (and higher) server
- ability to sync calendar data to the Domino Server
- data migration between Exchange and Domino has been improved, which improves data integrity
- improved interoperability with Notes/iNotes/Outlook using Domino
- ability to have multiple clients accessing the same NSF Store
- mail, calendar, and scheduling access from the Web
- ability to access to key Domino preferences from within Outlook (more detail below)
- ability to perform Free Time Lookups (more detail below)
- improved Installation program (more detail below)
- improved scalability and data synchronization between MS Outlook Client and Domino (more detail below)
Ability to Access to Key Domino Preferences from within MS Outlook
The Outlook Plug-in that started shipping with DAMO 6.0.2 gives users the ability to change Domino passwords and Out of Office settings from MS Outlook. In DAMO 6.5.1 (and above) the Plug-in is extended to provide access to Domino preferences such as:
- Automatic processing of meeting invitations
- Setting free/busy hours
- Replication settings
- Security settings
- further ability to manage password (import/export certificates; single logon; Domino admin can set up a policy to cause users' passwords to expire periodically and add a password expiration prompt added at logon).
The Plug-in consists of the Free/Busy Addin and Preference Addin, which leverage existing MS Outlook capabilities, and further integrate Domino and Outlooks. They provide seamless integration with MS Outlook interface, which makes operations familiar to end users. Ability to perform Free Time Lookups
A Free/Busy Addin provides the appropriate connection to the Domino Server containing users' free/busy time schedules. This is so the Chairperson of a meeting invitation can check the availability of invitees. The Free Time lookup uses the MS Outlook Attendee Availability dialog. Free Time lookups work with "Notes" address types.
The DAMO 6.5.x installation program registers the Free/Busy Addin with MS Outlook. Improved Scalability and Data Synchronization between Outlook Client and Domino
The MS Outlook storage file (.PST) is kept in sync with user's mail file on the Domino Server. This allows for Domino and MS Outlook data to be easily interchanged. It utilizes the Lotus Notes replication mechanism to synchronize the Outlook .PST file with Domino for Mail, Calendar and Contacts. The user now accesses local data only, which improves performance.
The Replication mechanism between the MS Outlook Client and Domino is the key component of the solution enabling Lotus Domino and MS Outlook data to be interchanged. DAMO no longer uses Open Standards (IMAP/iCalendar) to access Domino. Starting in 6.5.1, data is now interchanged using the native Notes/Domino replication technology (NRPC - Notes Remote Procedure Calls), thus enabling advanced features such as streaming replication, clustering and failover load balancing, and network compression to be used. Improved Installation Program
The Install program was written using the standard Windows MSI installer, which replaces the DOLS installation. It adds services for storage, transport, and addressing, configures replication, and creates local Outlook message store (username.pst file).
Installation now launches a setup program similar to the one used for the Lotus Notes Client. It will prompt for the minimum amount of information needed from the user. In the final steps, it will set up the needed Location documents, Connection documents, and Notes.ini settings that are needed for Outlook to access the server.
Architecture
DAMO enables customers to use their Outlook client to connect to a Domino server rather than a Microsoft Exchange server. As noted above, Mail messages, Calendar entries, and contacts are interchanged between the Outlook Client and the Domino Server using the native Notes/Domino Replication technology (NRPC - Notes Remote Procedure Calls). The Replication mechanism is the key component of the DAMO solution. DAMO 6.5.1 and above no longer use Open Standards (IMAP/iCAL) to access Domino data, as did earlier releases.
More specifically, DAMO is the conduit that keeps the local MS Outlook storage file (.PST) in sync with the user's mail file (<username>.nsf) on the Domino Server. DAMO replicates messages you create in your Outlook client (.PST file) to the Domino Server, and it also replicates new messages you receive from the Domino Server down to the Outlook client (.PST file).
Note: Even though the Domino Server is involved in this configuration, all of the DAMO installation and configuration takes place on the local workstation. There are no DAMO related installation/setup requirements on the Domino Server.
Note: The user now accesses local data only, which improves performance over previous releases of iNotes/Domino Access for MS Outlook.
