| Release Notes - IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files Version 3, Release 1 IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files Version 3.1 is available. A description of the offering is provided, along with links to installation resources.
Contents Description
Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files is a data protection solution for user workstations, lap-tops, and file servers. This product offers transparent, real-time replication and traditional backup services, and can operate independently of Tivoli Storage Manager. Files can be replicated to both the local disk and a remote target. In situations where network connectivity is temporarily unavailable, files are queued up and replication is resumed once the remote target is available, thus providing continuous data protection.

Getting started
For installation instructions see the IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files Installation and User's Guide, which is available in the Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files Information Center and also on the Quick Start CD.
The items below deserve special consideration for installation. They are not included in the IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files Installation and User's Guide, or are important enough to be included in IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files Installation and User's Guide and this document.
Upgrade install requires a system reboot.
If you install an upgrade over a previous version of Continuous Data Protection for Files, you must reboot your computer for the new setting to take effect and for your protection to continue.
Pull installation of 3.1 requires clients to upgrade to version 2.2.1.20 or higher.
If your version 2 Continuous Data Protection for Files client will pull the installation of version 3.1, your version 2 client must be at level 2.2.1.20 or greater. If you install by invoking the installer, this is not an issue.
On Microsoft Vista, you can not install when logged in as a domain administrator.
If you are logged in as a domain administrator, the installation process will not work correctly and the product will not function properly.
See the latest information for installing on Microsoft Vista.
Technical note 1258991 contains the latest information for installing on Microsoft Vista. This technical note also contains other issues and limitations of Continuous Data Protection for Files on Microsoft Vista. Updates, limitations, and known problems
Updates, limitations, and known problems are documented in the form of individual technical notes in the Support knowledge base at Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files Product Support web site. As problems are discovered and resolved, the IBM Support team updates the knowledge base. By searching the knowledge base, you can quickly find solutions to problems.
A list of limitations and known problems for version 3.1 is in technical note 1258268.
A list of issues and limitations of Continuous Data Protection for Files on Microsoft Vista is in technical note 1258991.
A list of issues and limitations of Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers is in technical note 1258990.
The items below deserve special consideration. Either they are not included in other documentation, or they are important enough to be included in other documentation and repeated in this document. Limitations and Known Problems
Continuous Data Protection for Files does not track the storage that is consumed by e-mail backup copies.
Due to design considerations, the current e-mail backup feature does not track the storage that is consumed by e-mail backup copies. So the number of files protected shown in the user interface does not include any e-mail files. Older files will not be purged from the backup location to make room for the e-mail files. The storage consumed by backup copies can exceed the configured maximum size. You will be notified of the excessive storage consumed by backup copies only if there is a physical limitation on the backup disk, at which time you will receive errors that the disk is full. See the technical note for a more complete description of the problem and the available solution.
Compression and encryption is not supported on WebDAV servers.
The compression and encryption features of Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files do not work properly with WebDAV servers so these features should not be used when backing up to WebDAV servers. An APAR has been opened to fix this problem.
E-mail data-level changes are not supported on WebDAV IIS and Tivoli Storage Manager servers.
The data-level change feature of e-mail backup does not work when backing up to WebDAV IIS and Tivoli Storage Manager servers. E-mail backups will be completed successfully to these servers, but the complete files will be backed up each time, rather than using delta files for subsequent changes.
Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive client lower than version 5.4 is not compatible with Continuous Data Protection for Files version 3.1.
If Continuous Data Protection for Files is installed on a computer where there is already installed a Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive client lower than version 5.4, there can be problems. Conflicts can arise with the level of dynamic-link libraries used by both products. This can cause Continuous Data Protection for Files to fail. The Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive client must be upgraded to version 5.4 or higher prior to installing Continuous Data Protection for Files version 3.1. Updates
Excluded items affect vaulted folders
The IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files Installation and User's Guide incorrectly states that excluded files and folders can be vaulted. If a file or folder is excluded, it is excluded from vault protection, as well as from continuous and scheduled protection. If a file or folder is not explicitly excluded, it can be vaulted by adding it to the vault list.
Program ID for PC and Server Editions is 5608-APG
The RTF (Rich Text Format) version of the license file, which displays during product installation, incorrectly states that the program ID for PC and Server Editions is 5608-ATG. The correct program ID for PC and Server Editions is 5608-APG. The program ID for Starter Edition is 5724-S64. Fix history
For a list of APAR fixes associated with Continuous Data Protection for Files, see technical note 1231298.
