Release Notes Description System requirements New features, limitations, and known issues Contacting IBM Software Support Description IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files is a real-time, continuous data protection solution for workstations and laptops. Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files is specifically designed to work well even if network connections are intermittent. Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files also provides continuous protection for file servers, reducing or eliminating backup windows and the amount of data potentially lost in a failure. Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files can back up your most important files the moment they change instead of waiting for a scheduled backup. Less important files are backed up periodically on a scheduled basis. To protect your files and make them available for date-based restore, Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files, V2.2, creates version-based copies of files: - Local disk: For protection even when not connected to a network
- Network file system: For remote-machine protection
- Tivoli Storage Manager or TSM Express: For use in more sophisticated enterprises
- WebDAV server: Backup location provided by an Internet Service Provider (ISP)
- Disk: External hard drive or USB drive

Fixes, features, limitations, and known issues Information in this section applies to new fixes, features, limitations, and known problems for Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files, V2.2. Fixes, September 2008 The following problems have been fixed in the September 2008 version.
APAR IC56844 - CDP v2.2 can crash when backing up a file. Fixes, April 2007 The following problems have been fixed in the April 2007 version.
APAR IC50907 - CDP can send a malformed request to a wedDAV server.
This build needs to be installed if you are upgrading from CDP v2.2 to CDP v3.1. Updates to v2.2 so that you can upgrade to v3.1 and save all previous settings. Fixes, September 2006 The following problems have been fixed in the September 2006 version. APAR IC49668 – Socket bind errors occur when multiple users are logged in. On Windows operating systems such as Windows XP and Windows Media Edition, Continuous Data Protection for Files reports the following erroneous message: "During socket bind operation, <process> failed; Reason: <reason>. Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted." APAR IC50105 – Backup fails when filenames have a percent sign in them. APAR IC50107 – Backup copies to server become inaccessible when access control lists are copied. Note: This problem is prevented by the following user action: From a command prompt whose current directory is the CDP install directory, enter the following: fpa config-set CopyFileSecurityInfo="0" APAR IC50221 – When using the user interface in national language versions of Continuous Data Protection for Files, an erroneous message occurs: “A problem occurred in the software; see the status page for details”. APAR IC50496 – Backup copies with double-byte file name cannot be restored from the Restore panel. Clicking the file icon in the Open column will not open the file if the file has double-byte characters in the file name. Backup reports table is blank when using Tivoli Storage Manager as a remote location. Backup report indicates operating system of IIS 6.0 server is “/”, rather than indicating the appropriate operating system. Continuous Data Protection for Files causes Microsoft Windows to display erroneous message: “‘Please insert disk”. Deleting the folder where your password is stored and entering incorrect password creates a corrupted password file and folder. No error message is displayed. Error log has red-colored background, which makes the log difficult to see and understand. A file containing single quotes cannot be backed up to webDAV. Files queued for remote backup to Tivoli Storage Manager server are delayed when network connection becomes available. Install fails when installing on file server. Scan Now causes Continuous Data Protection for Files to crash. Skip File button does not skip backup of a file. Subfile backup does not create delta files on IIS 5.6 webDAV server and Tivoli Storage Manager. Subfile backup on IIS 5.6 webDAV server and Tivoli Storage Manager creates delta files but does not back up the entire file. Tivoli Storage Manager VFS leaks file control block data, causing excessive memory use. WebDAV prompts unnecessarily when setting directory attributes. When changing a locked configuration, box pops up with erroneous text: “<rule =”. User can check button to Lock the configuration on other computers when Publish this computer's settings as the configuration template for other computers to use has not been checked. New features in version 2.2 WebDAV Support You can securely back up your files to a remote server that supports WebDAV protocol. Files can be copied to WebDAV servers with either continuous or scheduled protection. You can also restore these files through the Continuous Data Protection for Files interface. TSM API Feature Use a Tivoli Storage Manager or Tivoli Storage Manager Express server without installing a separate Tivoli Storage Manager client. Continuous Data Protection for Files now uses the Tivoli Storage Manager API to store and retrieve files. Encryption Protect data stored on remote devices by encrypting the data. The password you create is required to view or access the files on the remote device. Files stored locally are not encrypted. Compression Save space on your storage location and reduce network traffic by compressing backup copies. Push Install Deploy Continuous Data Protection for Files to many computers with push install. Initial installations and further upgrades are accomplished easily and automatically. Publish a model configuration to other Continuous Data Protection for Files clients. Improved support for Lotus Notes and Microsoft Outlook file. You can protect open and dynamic files, such as email files. Updated user interface The user interface allows access to new functions, is easier to use and easier to understand. Translation (13 languages) Display the product in any of 13 languages. The user interface and messages will be shown in the language of the operating system and browser. The interface display language can be changed by changing settings in the browser. Limitations Compression does not work with IIS 5.0 and IIS 6.0 servers. Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files compression and Tivoli Storage Manager compression are not compatible together. If you choose to use the compression feature with Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files, it cannot be used in combination with the Tivoli Storage Manager compression feature. If your Tivoli Storage Manager server is pre-configured to use compression, do not turn on the compression feature within Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files. Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files encryption and Tivoli Storage Manager compression are not compatible together. If you choose to use the encryption feature with Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files, it cannot be used in combination with the TSM compression feature. If your TSM server is pre-configured to use compression, do not turn on the encryption feature within Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files. Files backed up to a Tivoli Storage Manager server can only be restored through Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files interface. If you are using Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files to back up files directly into a Tivoli Storage Manager server using the integrated Tivoli Storage Manager API function, you must use the Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files User Interface to restore those files. You cannot use a Tivoli Storage Manager backup/archive client to restore those files. Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files does not back up mount points. If you have a volume mounted to a mount point, for example E:\mnt1, this cannot be added to the file list for inclusion in local and/or remote backup. Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files cannot back up files which it has previously encrypted. If you back up with encryption to a remote server, Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files cannot backup the encrypted files from the remote server to another location. If you choose to back up your backup storage locations, do not enable encryption for the primary backups to the remote server. International date format is used exclusively; no other date formats are available. Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files uses the international date format
yyyy/mm/dd (for example, 2005/12/22). Mirroring is not supported in the User Interface. There is a limitation in the support of bi-directional languages like Arabic. The User Interface does not currently support mirroring. Backup fails for files with path names with more than 230 characters. Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files does not back up files with path names that have more than 230 characters. If you attempt to back up a file which has a name with more than 230 characters, Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files displays an error in the log file and a popup error message. Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files will only back up files if they contain data. To be backed up by Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files, files must be written to and contain data. Automatic startup service exits after Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files is installed. After installation, Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files creates a Windows automatic startup service. However, the service exits after Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files is installed. Windows issues an error message, which you can ignore. The service will always run, and Windows will not issue the error message again. Scan Now processing will stop when it encounters a file that has xml expanders in its name. If a file name has xml expanders (for example, & >), synchronization processing will stop. Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files will save some Web pages in the Favorites directory. To avoid these problems, do one of the following: - Before you click the Back Up Now button, rename files with xml expanders using temporary names without xml expanders. After synchronization, rename the files with their original names.
- Exclude the directory containing the Web pages. For example, exclude *\Favorites\*.
Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files GUI will not display if spyware applications are running. Some spyware applications (for example, Adware) change the browser behavior. If you are running this type of spyware application, the Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files user interface will not display. To use the Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files user interface, uninstall spyware applications. Data encrypted or compressed with Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files 2.2 cannot be restored with earlier versions. If you back up data with the encryption or compression feature enabled with Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files version 2.2, you must use a 2.2 version to restore the files. The files will not be properly restored using previous versions (2.1.x). The Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for files encryption and compression features are mutually exclusive. If you are using TSM encryption with Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for files, the only supported encryption is AES128. Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for files only supports AES128 encryption. Known Issues USB devices will not store backup copies if they are not configured properly. Please see the tech note for configuration details. The Continuous Data Protection for Files 2.2 Installation and User's Guide fails to state that Backup Reports are generated only for scheduled backups. Backup Reports are not generated for Continuous Protection of files. When clicking on the Backup Reports link, there will be history links only when Scheduled Protection has run at least once. If Scheduled Protection is disabled, there will be no reports on this pane. See Chapter 7 “Administration Panels”, the section on “Backup Reports”. The Continuous Data Protection for Files 2.2 Installation and User's Guide fails to state that when the installer is pushed to a computer, that computer must be rebooted to complete the installation. See Chapter 8 “Advanced Installations”, the section on “Pushing the Installer to Other Computers”. If no file is selected in the Restore Files Panel and user clicks Restore Selected Items, there is no error message indicating that no files were selected. The user should receive a message indicating that no files were selected. The graphical user interface may display incorrectly if you click on the browser refresh button when using Mozilla Firefox. This is caused by a timing issue when displaying the user interface pages. This is a transient condition and can be cleared by closing the browser window and reopening. Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files 2.2 encounters problems if TSM Backup-Archive client lower than version 5.3.3 is installed. If you already have the Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive client installed on your computer, and the version is earlier than 5.3.3, you will encounter errors when you install Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files 2.2. (Reference TSM APAR IC49467). To avoid this issue, upgrade the TSM client to version 5.3.3 or higher before you install Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files 2.2. If Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for files is unable to set the ACL on the target file server, when you restore a file it will contain the file server’s default ACL. You can manually change the ACL of these files once they are restored. Alternatively, you can use the native file system copy function to copy the files to your hard drive rather than use the Restore function of Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files. The files will be accessible without having to change the ACL. Opening files on the Restore panel from the server can take much time. If you click on a file under the Open column on the Restore panel, Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files will open the file for you in the application which created it. The opening can be delayed when the file is on a remote server, or when it is a Microsoft Word or Excel document. There will be no message displayed while the file is being opened. Links from the Backup Reports page do not work in Mozilla Firefox. For security reasons, Firefox does not allow web content to link to local files. An error such as the following will appear in the JavaScript console: Error: Content at URL may not load or link to file:///xxxx If you need to follow links to local paths, drag the link to the location bar, then drop it on the Web page. If you do not want to use the security check and are willing to risk all the files on your system that your system can access, then add the following line to the user.js file in your personal profile directory: user_pref("security.checkloaduri", false); Before the configuration files are presented, you need to find your profile folder, which is the location on your hard drive where Firefox saves all your settings: On Windows XP/2000, the path is %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxx.default\, where xxxxxxxx is a random string of 8 characters. Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\. %AppData% is a shortened expression for the Application Data path on Windows 2000/XP. To use it, click Start -> Run, type %AppData%, and then press Enter. You will be directed to the appropriate folder, which is normally C:\Documents and Settings\ <user_name>\Application Data. Changing the remote storage area does not reset the number of protected files. Switching from one remote storage area to a different remote storage area will not cause the product to reset the number of files which have been protected on the remote server to 0. For example, if you have protected 115 files on a server, and then switch locations and run the Scan Now process, you can see double the number (230) displayed in the protected field. Actually, only half that amount exists on the new remote location (and half exists on the former remote location). USB drive may be displayed as a location of Local Storage Backup To:. If you connect a USB drive, you may see this as an option under the Local Storage Backup To: drop down list. Do not select this item. Any external hard drive is considered a remote location and should be configured under the Remote Storage location as a Disk. Clicking Browse button may bring up a window behind the user interface. When you click the Browse button in the Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files user interface, the browse window may be hidden behind the user interface. Click the browse item in your task bar or minimize the Continuous Data Protection for Files user interface to make the browse window visible. Wrong line wrap and truncation in the browser when displayed in Japanese. When the user interface is opened in a browser which is configured to display in the Japanese language, some column headings may appear truncated. This is due to a problem with the word wrap. You may need to stretch the size of the browser window to show the column headings properly. Cursor icon does not always appear as it should in the user interface. When the cursor is moved around the user interface, it does not always change to the correct icon shape. For example, sometimes it displays as an I-bar when it should display as a pointer and vice versa.
