Content
IBM Express Runtime is a set of universal installation and configuration tools for ISVs. Express Runtime can be used to assemble applications and products into easy-to-deploy and easy-to-manage software solutions or applications. With its powerful deployment wizard and intuitive integrated console, Express Runtime hides the complexity normally associated with installing, configuring, and managing an application so that non-IT personnel can perform the majority of tasks required. Everything required to run and manage a business application can be delivered with one purchase, one installation, one license, one administration console, and one support structure making it ideal for mid-sized companies or organizations.
Included with the tools is a pre-assembled runtime environment for Web and database applications that can be used as part of an application or as a prerequisite for these applications. This pre-assembled runtime environment consists of any combination of IBM WebSphere Application Server - Express, IBM HTTP Server, IBM Express Runtime console, DB2 Express or Informix Dynamic Server Express, and other middleware and platforms (including enterprise products and AIX), so there is no need to purchase, install, or manage these middleware products separately.

Express Runtime Version 2.2.1 contains the following features and enhancements:

Enhancements to WebSphere deployment accelerator project wizard

Several enhancements have been made to the WebSphere deployment accelerator project wizard, including the ability to do the following:

  • Target a profile other than the default, and create it if necessary
  • Target an application server other than the default, and create it if necessary
  • Map modules to a Web server other than the default, and create it if necessary
  • Run custom Jacl or Jython scripts during deployment

Additional deployment accelerator project wizards

Several new deployment accelerator project wizards, developed to automate the deployment of specific application types, are available. They perform a role similar to the WebSphere application deployment accelerator project wizard. The new wizards are as follows:

  • Database deployment accelerator project wizard
  • Custom deployment accelerator project wizard
  • Lotus Domino deployment accelerator project wizard
  • PHP deployment accelerator project wizard

Support for the latest middleware

The following new or changed middleware products are supported for deployment:

  • DB2 Express Edition Version 9.5
  • WebSphere Application Server - Express Version 6.1 Fix Pack 13
  • IBM HTTP Server Version 6.1 Fix Pack 13
  • Informix Dynamic Server Express 11.50 TC1 (for Windows) and Informix Dynamic Server Express 11.50 UC1 (for Linux)

Support for the latest software platforms

The following changed or new deploymenttarget platforms are supported:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5.0
  • IBM i5/OS Version 6 Release 1
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10.0
  • Windows Server 2003 SP2

The following changed or new developmentplatforms are supported:
  • Windows Vista

Enhanced capability to automatically configure applications and resources

The facility to discover (locate) applications and resources is automatically run when the console is deployed; the applications and associated resources that were previously or simultaneously deployed are then included in the console configuration, and displayed on the dashboard. This configuration is embodied in the business application definitions XML file.

In this version, you can also configure backup schedules and integrated problem determination in the business application definition.

Support for enabling high availability database configurations

This release provides license terms that enable you to configure DB2 and IDS databases for high availability, without having to purchase separate licenses for your backup server.

Other enhancements

Other enhancements enable you to do the following:

  • Specify operating system specific behavior and default values for variables in the application editor of the Express Runtime Developer
  • Specify preset validation rules for variables in the deployment accelerator project wizards
  • Select Ant as a special program type in the Custom deployment accelerator project wizard and application editor of the Express Runtime Developer
  • Generate a task file for any solution loaded in the deployment wizard

New development environment

The Express Runtime development environment now uses the IBM Eclipse SDK (IES) instead of the WebSphere Application Server Toolkit.
